    Chum Box for Shark Fishing

    Hey Guys,

I had the pleasure of doing a presentation on Offshore Shark Fishing Techniques at the Canyon Runner Seminars this year. In the process of going over the gear required for Shark Fishing, I would show the standard Chum Box I have been using for years. I never really thought much about the Chum Box I have been using and figure most people used something similar. From the reaction of the crowd allot of guys had not seen this type of chum box. So I figured I would share it with the SFC crowd.

It is very simple to make and does not cost much.

    Materials Needed
    • 2 Standard Milk Crates
    • Pair Stainless Steel Hinges
    • 2' Coated Cable
    • 1- A-1 Polyball
    • 6' Polypropylene Line (Floats on Surface)

Step 1- Connect the two milk crates using the stainless hinges (make sure to use bolts and lock nuts, no self tapping screws)

Step 2- Attach poly ball to top of one of the mike crates using the coated cable (try not to use regular line b/c the sharks can eat through)

Step 3- Attach the 6' Polypropylene to top of chum box

Step 4- Place Chum in box with or with out Bucket and or Lid to regulate dispersion of chum

Step 5- Use zip ties to close box, cut and replace when changing buckets

    And your Done!!!

    Advantages of this Chum Box
    • Fits 1 standard 5 gal. chum bucket inside perfectly
    • Chum box stays tethered to boat with out beating up the boat
    • Once hooked up untie the Polypropelyne and let bucket go (Your chum slick is still fishing while fighting the fish)
    • No need to pull bucket inside boat while fighting the fish- making a huge mess

Thanks Guys, Fred I've got a whole head of ideas

I've tried all sorts of ways to fish chum buckets, by far this is my favorite method. One thing to keep in mind when letting the bucket go, keep an eye on it!!! Especially after a long fight you would be surprised how far you can get from the bucket. It is great getting back to your slick and its fishing the exact same as when you hooked up and have on occasion showed back to the chum pot and had Mr. Mako chomping away.

    Kevin,

I like the poly ball idea. What I have been doing is getting one of those "pool noodles" (long styrofoam toys that kids play with in pools) and zip tie it around the edges of the crates (top and bottom). That way if it does rub of your boat the soft pool noodle rub and not the hard plastic. But your method is even better.

One other use for pool noodles is to keep hooks and leaders organized. Sink the hook in the noodle and wrap the lead around. Seperate the hooks buy an inch and repeat.

Wow, thanks! I was just covering the bucket with the milk crate and bungeeing it around to hold it on.
I am assuming you are cleating off the 6 foot line and don't have a problem bumping the boat because the float helps keep it out there?

also what float size do you use for this and the poon line? A1, A2, A3? Thanks!

i use the same milkcrates for chum. another strong point is that while fighting a critter, you dont have any breaks in your slick.. have another bait ready when you return to pick up you polyball, more often that not they will be a few sharks checking out the milkcrates.

I just finished putting my chum box together. I did put the loops in the cable and I am going to try the carabiner clips to easily attach to the crates and ball.

    Thanks again
