charts, GPS, coordinates and fishing grounds

    Hello all.

First, I am not looking for your data or secret spots. I have my own but need some help in managing them.

I am running Furuno NN3D on the Jenny Lee and love the system. Until this past Sunday when I found a shortfall and am looking to correct it.

We launched out of Saquatucket ramp. We made way through Pollack Rip (on the chars and GPS). We wanted to fish Crab Ledge. It was no where on the chart to be found. I searched my paper MapTech charts, no Crab Ledge. It broke down to literally Goggling their coordinated on a Droid and then plugging them into the NN3D.

I am using the charts which came with the NN3D.

Soooo, do others have this problem? Not nec. with Crab Ledge, but with any specific fishing spot you are planning to cover.

What pre-trip planning do you do? Do you have a book of fav lat long? Do you plug them into your GPS prior to departure?

Do you/can you upgrade the charts in your NN3D?

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

    some answers

I just wanted to follow up and post what I have learned so far.

You are correct. Capt Seagull charts are the bomb. I knew that part. What I didn't know was that I didn't have the RIGHT chart. I know that sounds obvious, but suffice it to say, the chart for East of Chatham is the Georges Bank/Nantucket Sound chart.

Also, I took my Furuno MFD12 off the boat and powered it from a 12v converter at home. I plugged in a USB keyboard and started poking around. I was able to rename many waypoints, delete a ton that were meaningless, color code many according to Tuna, SB, Scup, Ledge, Ramp etc and then put them in the appropriate group.

I also just learned that I can do a split screen with both the Raster and Vector chart up at the same time, both moving as I move each telling me just slightly different information.

Wouldn't it be the bomb to get a Capt. Seagull's chip for your GPS?

    hmmmmmmm.

More to come, but the lesson I have learned so far, is that if I spend days on end, setting up all my plano 3700 for each task on the boat, sharpen all gaffs, poons hooks, test all drags etc, why was I not entering in some basic coord of place's I'd like to hit OTW? Lesson learned.

Its so true, I hook my humminbird up to a car battery at home from time to time to edit and check out the charts and do pretrip planning. the navonics charts arent the best but i still compare them to other hard charts/ info from the net.. its all in the preparation, now i can just catch some fish Lol! Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. (Helps Prevent)
