After some heavy winds and big seas offshore which kept us tied to the dock for 5 days, we ventured back out with 7 time returning guests Jim Ricardi and David Butler on board for a canyon outing. I decided to point the Castafari west instead of east as the eastern canyons have really slowed down due to the colder water temperatures moving in. Our previous trip out was pretty uneventful with only a handful of decent fish and no marlin. There is nothing above 72 degrees from hydro to oceanographer and the water is blue green at best. I picked up and ran 7 times last trip! The only decent water thats left is from the Tails to Veatch. And judging by the weather coming, this could change for the worse too. This western water is blue green as well. Blue water at the northeast canyons is gone for 2010. The blue green stuff is still productive, but doesnt hold fish for very long. There are no real defined breaks around either. The satelite charts are getting false readings...most all of them. The break at Atlantis is not accurate. This is common for this time of year as the water color variations are minimal. I will say however that there is still a pulse of life out there and QUALITY fish hanging around.
We encountered some very big yellowfin. One fish was pushing 100 pounds...biggest fish of the season for us. It hit like an eyeball. We only caught a handful of yellowfin though, all over 60 pounds. We also managed another stalky 400 pound class blue marlin caught by Dave. The fish put on an awesome display of aireals...best yet this season. What was interesteing is that we caught this fish in 72 degree water and up on the flats. We also caught 2 very nice wahoo. Jimmy catches a hoo on every trip he does with us! He caught 3 last year too! One of these fish was absolutely massive...over 100 pounds. It was the biggest fattest wahoo I have ever seen. It dwarfed the 89 pounder we caught several yerars ago...68 inches with a 28 inch girth...28 inches! We also managed a swordfish on the night chunk and another big yellowfin. A few mahi to boot and the coolers were full of fish. So not a quantity trip like weve seen early on, but quality was certainly the trademark of this trip. Overall we had a blast despite the 2 hour trolling lulls we encountered. Im not sure what will happen from here. We are schedualled to fish 4 more times out there but this cold weather may put an end to that. Perhaps its time to start thinking about bluefin tunaBe sure and check out the Castafari Monster Club IPTV show on our website for all this action. You decide how big you think this wahoo was. perhaps we should have wieghed it in for the state record and not eaten it!
