We finally switched out of bluefin mode and made our maiden voyage down to the edge with a group of very charasmatic returning castafari clientel. I decided to fish the break situated at Veatch canyon as its a significant one to say the very least and the water has been sliding that way. I dropped them in 20 miles northwest of the canyon along a 5 degree change of 70 to 75. Lots of scattered weeds and the water looked good. It didnt take long for clips to pop and 50 pound class yellowfin to hit the deck. The action was fairly constant with 2's and 3 packs. Then came the real excitement when a blue girl crashed in on the center rigger and sucked down one of the "hick baits". Unfortunately it was on a 50 so we had our hands full as the fish was 450 to 500 all day. The angler had never squared off with a big fish before so we were all tested, including the boat as we backed down for 20 minutes straight. An hour later we brought her boatside. Captured some amazing footage which will be featured on the Castafari Monster Club on the website. The marlin measured 105 inches from the jaw to fork...beautiful fish. It took us literally over an hour to revive the fish as she was totally exhausted. It was a great way to start the billfish season to be on the board with a blue one. We continued working toward Veatch and eventually pounded the southweast wall catching 2 dozen more 50 pound class yellowfin. The night bite was dead...not even a sniff.
The morning troll was lights out and we eventually baited and hooked up our first white marlin. Textbook hook-up and release boatside after a series of jumps at the boat. The fish was lit up like a xmas tree...very healthy fish. We kept hammering the yellows and evntually mahi too, including a 20 pound class bull. Its a high class problem when you run out of fish storage. I didnt see or even hear of any bigeye taken. Though I guess the Hudson is going off right now with a solid bigeye bite. We may head in that direction tomorrow.
For those who are interested, the Castafari IPTV Show The Monster Club is up and running on the Castafari website at www.castafari.com You can see the excitement first hand! Tight lines. We'll be on 68 out there tomorrow and friday.
