So I know how everyone on here feels about the quality of the carolina classic. But would anyone really go for the gas engine as opposed to the diesel option? And what about the one with the diesel jackshafts?

Go diesel. One you go Diesel you will never turn back to gas.

Are you talking in the 25, 28 or 30 something foot hull? I have a 25 Carolina, gas 8.1 375 h.p. jackshafted. I have been craving either a diesel powered 28, or a downeast hull. I know that there are 25's in the diesel version, though I have never personally run a diesel boat I'm sure that once I do I probably wont ever turn back to gas.

That being said, the boat itself is a beast for a boat in the 25 ft class. It plows through nasty seas like a much larger boat, Im sure the fact that it weighs 9,000 lbs loaded with fuel and gear helps with that. I havent had any issues with the Jackshaft/outdrive setup and have found that the dou-prop outdrive grabs water like a mother, making backing into slips an absolute breeze. Having such a deep vee, I've got to be making at least 18 knots to get her on plane and I believe that the diesel 25's cruising speed is around 22 knots(someone correct me if im wrong) I'd think that it would be easy to fall off plane when running at a slower speed like that. I cruise it at 28 knots @ 3400 rpm and top out at 36 knots @ 4000. Feel free to pm me for more info.

Shes for sale by the way.

Yes I have been looking at the 28. I have done lots of fishing out of ceter consoles but I just feel that I would prefere a nice big heavy beast of a diesel.

NO on gas, no on jackshaft.

Gassers don't have range or the torque of diesels; jackshafts and outdrives are maintenance issues waiting to happen.

Inboard diesel with at least 250 HP if you want to go to the canyons; Yanmar 315 or Volvo D4-260's are your best options for a combination of fuel efficiency and speed. Cummins 330 or Volvo D6-310's if speed is more important than range.

Oh yeah - engine room hatch and layout was redesigned in 2003 or 4; the newer versions have far better access than the older ones. LIkewise the helm deck and layout was redesigned at the same time and gives you far more storage space.

The 28 CC boat definite runs better with the 6 cylinder engines. I have had both (D4 -250 HP Cummings and 310- D6 Volvo) .I would say the right engine for you would be how long of a haul do you have to the fishing grounds and how many hours do you put on the boat in a year. If you take long hauls and put a lot of hours on your boat the D6 are defiantly the motor of choice. That hull really puts the D4 engine to work. Check out the Carolina Classic boat owner’s forum before you one. There is a lot of information that may help you make up your mind.
