Cape Cod Bluefin Report - July 8
After reading plenty rave reviews about the jigging & popping fishery up off Cape Cod and the same reviews of Capt. Dom @ Coastal Charters Sportfishing, my friends and I joined him July 8. It was a tough day with southeast wind, blazing sun, and fast moving fish. We left the dock at 4:45 and ran to the tip of P-town. We saw a few fish here and there and Dom ran at them but by the time we got close enough to cast, the fish sounded. With intel in hand, Dom then made an 18 mile run to the south only to find the fish there had disappeared too. We ran back to our original spot and Dom still wasnt happy with what he saw. We then ran about 6 miles and saw a decent pod. We had one bite but it didnt come tight. We proceeded even further north with radio chatter indicating some good life. We worked the area pretty well and finally Dom saw what he liked. Birds that had been floating began circling. Sporadic pops became constant, and we finally came tight on a fish at 1pm. All 3 of us and Dom took 3 turns on this fish. The fish put up a valiant fight but we finally got him alongside and Dom quickly id'd the fish as an under. The fish taped out at 58 inches, about 110lbs.
All throughout the day we had breaching whales (humpbacks & finbacks), breaching tuna up to 3-400lbs and lots of bird action. I have to hand it to Dom. He is completely passionate about what he does, and puts a lot of pressure on himself to make his charters happy. He must have done over 100 miles of running and searching for us. He loined our fish and even had some soy & wasabi handy so we could nosh on some sushi. I would recommend anyone interested in this fishery to get out with him. I'll probably be back up later in the year.
