    butterfly style jigs for cod

I'm looking for a little info from any of you that use butterfly style jigs instead of the norwegian style for cod. I'm looking for what weights/sizes are popular. I know it greatly differs from day to day,and conditions, but just looking for the general rule. thanks for the info in advance!!! its almost that time!!!

I like the shimano 6 and 8 oz flat side butterfly jigs - I've had pretty good luck with them as long as the drift isn't too fast. Best thing is that if you get a dog you can get them off easily. Trebles + dogs are really horrible.

Whatever you like to jig with. You will catch as many fish with the regular style cod jigs than the butterfly. Butterflies will help you reduce snagging of fish and if fished as a single you can save a little energy and dance the jig easier. Other than that I wouldn't get too caught up on sizes and colors. The faster the drift the heavier jig you need.

Not sure about cod but I did real well on haddock last year using a 7oz butterfly jig. I believe the pattern was a blue or green mackerel pattern.

When you are down that deep, does color make a difference? Not a jigging guy, just curious.

The deeper you go into the water column the more of the red spectrum is absorbed. Around 50 feet down a red teaser is only showing up as a shade of grey. Down near 200 feet there is no color. I always found it funny when people liked one paticular color for deep jigging. It is the motion and /or scent which is causing a strike.

Here is an interesting article about color which explains it in some fairly basic terms.

Interesting. Seems that blue is the color for deep jiggging.

The only suck part about Butterfly jigs for cod is to many hooks flying around to get stuck in your fingers. Just use a single hook or be ware
Still looking at a nice scar between my thumb and finger.

The problem with your scale is this. They use human eyes for a reference. Fish have a completely different rod to cone structure. Some also see in what is called flash vision think strobe light effect. Also each genus family has evolved to excel in the environment they inhabit. look at the pupil size on a codfish or haddock notice the color of that pupil. Look at a bluefish eye or a striper eye different aren't they?
