Sorry - no pics. Pretty little fish though.

They did ok in the livewell for a couple hrs - surprisingly well considering the kids spent most of their time playing with them.

Good to know they are around, and work well for both bass & tuna. Thanks for the feedback. We'll give them more of a go next time w/out the kids on board, and bring them to the bank if they are still around for the next bait round up...

I'll have to check Buzzard Bait out sometime too as I work in Wareham.

oh and kitebuz, were you hitting this bait solely off the sounder? no surface pushes or anything? if so thats pretty impressive, its not easy to do

yeh - the butterfish we were picking up just from the sounder. We had seen a couple pogy splashes earlier, which was why we were so surprised to come up w/ a net full of butters - we've spent alot of mornings pulling empty nets trying to get it dialed in (still do sometimes).

The coolest sounder / netting episode yet for us was marking a pogy school along the bottom in @ 14' of water, and what looked like a big fish in the middle of the school on the bottom. We knew it was a keeper b/c that throw came up w/ a bunch of pogies along with a nice 33" striper! Threw it back (legality questions aside) as it felt like cheating.

CappyD - do you hydro-gut the butterfish like you do the macks to prep before freezing, or just leave guts in?

the custom throw net I use, has an 80' line on it. The guy that makes them says down in Jersey & NY they do alot of open water, depth finder cast netting, in 30-50' He says the seiners have cleaned out the shallow water schools, so theyve learned to fish deep for bait. Pretty cool throwing on a school you cant see, and pulling up a bunch!! Saturday I made 1 toss on a school and 2 of us couldnt lift it in the boat !! Wish that happened more often!!

30-50' - wow, that's cool! I didn't realize you could consistently target bait at that depth w/ a castnet.

i bought some pogies this morning before i went out, sun came up and i looked at the bait in the livewell...2 butterfish ended up sneaking in but did not make it to long, the pogies were a lot more aggressive so we just used those.

A beautiful site! Good luck out there - I wish I was heading out to the bank this morning, it's about perfect right now on BB to make the trip thru the ditch w/ a full livewell...
