Anthony's Ark is a blowboater
boston harbor - 6/20/11
Great night on the water. Stars and planets must have been aligned – left the office @ 5, walking to the bus, truck drives by, who is it? Friend I’m fishing with. Back to ctown, changed, grabbed gear, quick stop at beer store, we’re leaving the dock, all before 6. Never has it been so smooth trying to get in an evening trip after work. Buddy doesn’t get out fishing much and was all about fishing live macks, as was I. Done. Game plan was determined. Past the diving birds and boats in front of the airport (yeah, I know what I said the other day, but again, I had a game plan), straight out to the boston light area to catch macks. Marking bait around 30’-40’. Tide was ripping out there so our rigs seemed to be higher up in the water column, but that didn’t seem to matter. 10 8” baits later, off to chuck some livies against the rocks. My buddy isn’t that used to using baitrunners and live bait, so after I explained the process, I heaved the first bait for him…smack against the water goes the bait, crank of the reel, baitrunner engaged, hand him the rod, I turn to bait my rig and.…BAMN!! Fish engulfs bait, baitrunner is running, I’m thinking, “really, are you kidding me?!!?” Brian listens well, lets the fish run, raises the rod tip, starts to reel, fish on. I don’t even have my bait in the water yet, so I hold off. Fish to the boat, thick fish, nice fish I’m telling him. Def a keeper. Leader in hand, I’m lipping the fish, picking it up, it slaps its tail, I lose the fish and away it swims. D’Oh! Oh well, it’s a catch in my book. Def over 30”, bigger than all the fish i've been catching recently, prob closer to 32”. For the next 1 1/2hrs, we’re into constant action. Brian catching fish, I’m hooking into fish, one nice one but couldn’t land $hit last night. Sonnaofbitch. 4 fish boated - ~32”, 28”, 29” & 24” – all by him, all fish released, 3 on purpose. Ha! Back at the dock at 9. Blackened chicken sangy at Ironsides along with a couple Sierra Nevada Pale Ales to end the night. Great night all around! Back at again tonight, this time with the lady.
****side note. On the way out, just as we got underway by WTC, I saw 3 very distinct tail slaps/flips – call it what you want but when I see that, I think pogies.
