Boon Island- Sunday- everything except tuna!?
Made a run out of Portsmouth @ 0500 Sunday July 6th- running in thick fog and low light conditions, we cleared 2KR at 0535- this is gonna be a long run
Set a track for Boon Island, 12 miles away- it would be slow going at 7-12 knots with the fog giving us up to 100 yds of vis Had my buddy Seth onboard- we brought the heavy artillery with hopes of needing a few 30s and 50s to get the job done. I had just picked up a few new cool things at Fishermans Outfitter to add to our building tuna spread- (green mack chain on a 4' bar- this thing has some action and pulls out of the highest tension on the roller troller (wtf?) and a 4' spreader bar w/ mini-squid green machine thing) http://www.fishermansoutfitter.com/ We're closing in on Boon Island - figured that we'd see this tower (located approx 8 mi due E of York Beach, ME)~ this lighthouse fires white flash every 5 sec~ and this sucker is 133' tall. In clear conditions from the beach in York, this tower looks tall. We were .53 miles from the island per chartplotter and we saw nothing.......could you see the tower above the fog which seemed to be not more than 50' above the surface? No! (see image below on a clear day) We went lines in and dragged 4 of my favorite go-to bluefish plugs through the places that always produce blues sometime in July Nothing but a lot of cabbage and surface weeds- we were cleaning lines for an hour - we worked all around Pollock Rock/ Boon Is & Boon Ledge Spotted bait all around the island and over to Boon Ledge~ there were Minke & Finback whales in 60-80 fow chasing schools of bait Everything was there except the tuna A stickboat greeted us around 0900 and then quickly headed E towards Jeffries disappearing into the fog We opted for the low fuel burn option- and set a breakfast table with 5 line tuna spread and headed S toward the Shoals- hoping to find some life down that slot- only saw a few bait balls before reaching Shoals- we were back at the dock before noon- after having braved the course between 2KR and Newcastle light- oh, and the 'dummy of the day' award went to a 40+ ft sailboat with full sails flying tacking through the fog at full speed~ this crew on the sailboat had just plunged from sunny clear skies into chit storm soupy fog- hope his Sunday had a happy ending Somebody...please write when you see tuna up our way....

We ran past there on Saturday on our way out to the fingers. It did look good- bait, gannets, whales....just one ingredient missing
With all of the bait around, they should stick around if they ever come off stellwagon and turn the corner. Keeping the fingers crossed... |

Yesterday, I was groundfishing at Old Scantum. Birds, whales and bait. Foul hooked a few herring. Moved to New Scantum. Same deal. Lots of birds, whales and bait. Didn't mark charlie at all though. Couple pollock up to 15 pounds, too.

We were actually fishing for about 5 hours and picked up 6 or 7 cod (all under 10 pounds) and 2 pollock around 15 pounds. Man, I forgot how those things fight. If you PM me, I'll let you know exactly where we were, although as you can tell it was really nothing special at all.
Last time I took my girl out was in April. I was running about 25 knots in 4 footers. We launched right off a wave, came completely out of the water and the starboard side came down on another wave. Of couse, as the captain , I was ready for the impact, but she wasn't. She went flying. Actually came somewhat close to flying out of the boat. Oh, and we didn't have enough rain gear for both of us. Wicked wet ride! She hasn't been in the boat since (She says she wants to go out again )hahaha...Learn from others mistakes. Have fun ![]()
