Bluefin off Block

Headed out yesterday from Charlestown in search of some schoolie bfts. We heard some reports that they were around the fairway buoy so we decided to check it out. We had a late start and finally arrived at around 8 and trolled for an hour with no bites. We saw one boat hooked up so we decided to start trollin to our sharking grounds. Just as we changed course a 30 screams off and we gaff 34". We caught three more in the same area including a double-header. We caught two on a purple and black jet head, one on a green machine behind a bird and the last one on a pink spreader bar.

35 min into sharking we got bit. After we swung an missed I looked up and saw an 8 foot mako heading towards the boat. We pitched him a mack and we're hooked up. During the hour fight we brought him to the boat three times but just out of gaff range. He ended up wrapping in the wire and broke the mono. Here's a pic of the tuna we kept.

We were out last Saturday in the same area and it was pretty much non stop. We went to the same area yesterday trolled for about 2 hrs and only got two. Plenty of whales and marked some bait but the tuna were scarce. We saw a few other boats hook up but it was nothing like Saturday.

Planing on Saturday again weather permitting.

Fished this area the last couple days. Lots and lots of life. Did better on the evening bites when the mob went home. Fish weren't super aggressive but managed 15-20 each day. Small zuchini clones and blurple jets did well. All fish in the 30+ pound range.

Had a couple decent/good size fish take a couple passes and misses on the monster squid bar as well so there may be some bigger mixed in.

Two different boats have seen giants chasing bluefish in the last week. Mitch chagnon on the Sakarak saw them off the east side of the island and Joe and Rachel Fallon saw them 3 mi south while they were hauling pots. 300-500 lb fish. both crews know what they are talking about. I saw a photo of a "140 pound" fish brought in to the island the other day. Didn't look to be more than 100 or so. Still, nice fish.

Headed out East this morning and spotted Whales and bait on the surface just after the Mudhole. Unfortunately, there did not appear to be anything else. We ended up with a bluefish taking a green machine. The ingredients were there but the fish were not. We saw bait and small fish on the surface but nothing on the machine.

Set up for sharking out to the East more with a slow drift and after 4 hrs. released a pup mako about 12lbs. That was it for the day. Skies in the West turned gray and we headed in.

Could not ask for better weather. Unfortunatley, fish did'nt cooperate.

We were there Sat morning 8/2. It was slow but we got 2 bft -42" that went in the box and another one a little smaller on the nexty pass. That was early...bite died out after that. Lots of sand eels out there ...and bluefish.
