    Angry Bluefin ESA Listing...

See the notice below. As you know, CBD filed a petition a while back and NMFS approved the petition to go forward to a full status revview. This does not mean they are being listed today, and it means that NOAA will dig deep into this issue and decide whether they think bluefin should be listed on the ESA within a year or so. Such a listing would end all fishing for bluefin in this country, period. ABTA will be working very hard on this and its time you joined if you have not already. And be ready to fight when the time comes! This is complete BS!

    Atlantic Highly Migratory Species News
NOAA Fisheries is initiating a status review for the Atlantic bluefin tuna in response to a petition from the Center for Biological Diversity to list the fish as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

NOAA Fisheries has reviewed the information submitted by the Center with the listing petition along with commercial and recreational fisheries data, publications and results of studies, and has determined that the petitioned action may be warranted.
This 90-day finding that a petition under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to list a species contains "substantial information" that the petitioned action may be warranted; it is not a listing for Atlantic bluefin tuna. The finding is the first step in a prescribed process for responding to every petition filed with NOAA Fisheries to list a species under the ESA. An affirmative 90-day finding is required if the petition presents sufficient information to meet criteria specified in the Act.
NOAA Fisheries asks for documented information for use in the status review, such as descriptions of current or past distribution, abundance, population condition and structure, and details on any ongoing conservation efforts. The agency is also accepting the names of recognized experts who could serve as peer reviewers for the final status review report on Atlantic bluefin tuna.
A full explanation of information sought can be found in the Federal Register.
A determination on whether a listing is warranted is due in May 2011, a year after the date of the petition, upon completion of a comprehensive status review.
Go to http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/species/...luefintuna.htm for a copy of the Federal Register Notice, Center for Biological Diversity petition, information on the ESA petition and listing process, and links to more information on current management of Atlantic bluefin tuna.

This whole thing is a joke. CBD probably does not even care about bluefin and simply see this as their best bet towards getting oil drilling stopped in the Gulf of Mexico. These people are no good, and are going to have a hell of a fight on their hands!

exactly. they have no issues throwing us under the bus to put a big trophy on their wall.

and keep in mind the east is supposedly following their already-low quotas this year.

fwiw, will attach the abta comment that went in trying to stop this from going forward.

Although I agree with the sentiments of Chris you must be fishing a different part of the ocean.

Instead of NOAA wasting more money on this stuff I'd much prefer they put sat tags on 200 or 300 65-85" fish so we could once and for all begin to understand at what age those fish spawn in the Gulf. Instead the bureaucrats will do what they do, accomplish nothing but waste a lot of time and money and cause Chris and his group to spend a lot of their time and money in the process.

Chill with the bickering - this would shut down ALL FISHING FOR BLUEFIN ... footballs to giants, REC and COMM ... let's all smarten up, work together, give $ and support to ABTA and our other allies THEN we can all go back to the schoolyard-finger pointing crap ... this is a SERIOUS fight to save our fisheries, fellas ... ask yourselves and your buddies, "What have I/You?We done to support our side in this fight? What else can be done?"
The other side is VERY well funded and connected and loves nothing more than a divided/complacent adversary.
Please do your part; 'fingers crossed' isn't enough.
(Sorry to rant, but I really care about the future of tuna fishing - so do you or you wouldn't be reading this)
