Blue Sharks, Mackerel Sharks and Tunas

Got bit by a bunch of blue sharks and 3 mackerel sharks the last couple of days. Landed two mackerels- biggest of which was over 9 feet . Partner boat and my boat each got 77 inch tunas. Absolutely incredible air show on todays Mackerel. Had to drive away from it cuz i had no clue where it would fly again. The big one on wednesday came in with a whimper - I think it stunned itself when it did a back flop from 10 feet up on the take of the bait. Mackerels were released after photos to make more mackerels.

Really easy sharking in the shallow water on top of the bank with live pogies. From what I can tell, the pogies bring the sharks in better than chum.

Bafreakingzillions of little tunas at PHB. I think every troll boat is getting bit 5 plus times a morning. Those fish seem to be averaging in the high 40 inch range. Would bet the farm that not 5 minutes ever lapsed on the radio today without an "I'm Tight". Greggory has probably caught 2 dozen fish this week - No kidding

Mackerel shark! Haven`t thought about them in a long time. About 20 years ago I spoke with this guy based in P-Town that would untangle whales caught up in gear. Anyway we got to talking and mentioned I might catch a Mackeral shark. He said if I did catch one call him ASAP and make sure I gut it right away. He said they were delicious. LOL he didn`t tell me they were insane!!

I can`t remember this guys name but it was something weird like Stormy Weathers. Anybody remember this guy?

    Mackerel sharks

I had to google it cause I don't remember hearing a specific individual species called mackerel Shark. Its a broad family type. what species are you directly relating to here? My assumption is Mako as you mentioned aerial activity...

thanks for clearing up that confusion, I had the same question...makos, whites, porbeagles, thershers, tigers, even basking sharks are all mackerel sharks. the local terms get confusing sometimes. we just call them porbeagles or makos or whatever they are where I am.

congrats on a great day OTW to the OP.

Sorry about the confusion. I just grew up with my old man refering to mako sharks as mackerel sharks. I think alot of old timers did. They also used to call the tunas in cape cod bay "Horse Mackerel".

yep, I've heard them called horse macs too, confused me when I was a youngster until my dad explained it to me. I had pictures in my head of 300 pound macs out there...

how'd the fishing at PHB hold up after the storm? we were doing well there last few weeks too. I may make a run there wed or fri. feel free to pm me if you like.
