Bill Fisher tackle Nantucket fishing report 7-11
Fishing Report: July 9th, 2011
Go Fish!
This is the moniker on one of our new shirts, but more than anything it is the message that we want to convey in this fishing report. Fishing has been very good this past week and are optimistic that it will continue. Bass are still being caught in good numbers, but we anticipate this slowing down shortly. Blues, and big ones, are everywhere. Bottom fishing continues to produce and your dinner guests will thank you. Ponds are slowing down just a bit, but continue to be a great alternative on a windy day. Lastly, the offshore fishery is just getting going...
If your targeting linesiders (Striped Bass), your best bet is still at night or in the early hours. Fish are still feeding somewhat aggressively on big soft baits that imitate eels or large sand eels. Bigger swimmers retrieved slowly also continue to work as do the hybrid swimmers. Remember when you fish in the late hours, patience is a virtue and reel slowly! These fish are hunting, not like Bluefish on the south shore. The east side of the Island, Tom Nevers, Madaquecham and Miacomet still keep producing, saying this- just go find your own hole on the south shore and put in your time, you'll be rewarded. The harbor and north shore also continue to produce fish, even during the day. Fly guys are having better luck in these areas though as it is resembles fishing the flats.
Blue's are here, everywhere and some big fish. We've heard reports of 15lb fish... South Shore, East, Great Point and on the boat- simply have a top water plug and crank as hard as you can. Despite what a lot of people say- these fish are great eating. There is nothing better than a beach bbq, some fresh fish and a few cold ones from hatch's. Remember, you'll need leaders and some fresh line on those reels- get out there and make it happen.
So, my favorite story from the past week comes from two of our favorite friends. I say favorite, because they are willing to try anything, they just love to learn about fishing Nantucket. These are guys that have taken their fishing IQ from Bluefish in the Chord to being avid Bass and Offshore fisherman. They don't care what they are fishing for, they just enjoy learning new types of fishing. So hot off a day of catching a couple of 40lb fish, they wander into the shop and want to know more about bottom fishing. We worked with them on the basics and told them to go have fun. Well, the reports are they did very well and enjoyed it just as much as every other type of fishing they have done. Maybe they'll try pond fishing next! Our point is, just because you are comfortable with one type of fishing, does not mean that you should continue to focus on that. Go outside your comfort zone and do something new. We promise you'll enjoy it...
Bottom fishing, especially on the east side of the Island continues to be great. Fluke and Black Sea Bass are plentiful and delicious. Get out there and try it...
Some big new is... the offshore bite is just starting. Tuna are out East, but not in big numbers and there have several good reports to the South. Our friends on Vineyard are telling us that the Claw and Dump are producing with some good sized bluefin. I have not heard of any sharks being caught yet- but I'm sure they have and know that they will. With sharks though- we encourage you to let these fish go if you are not going to eat the fish. Too often sharks are caught and killed just for the picture. You can safely take a picture and release the shark. Don't get me wrong, we kill a few smaller sharks every summer, but we let 95% of them go. This goes for all fish as well, if you and your family can't consume them, let them go to fight another day and to continue to reproduce. We will all be the benefishiaries (pun intended) in years to come.
We do want to let you all know about some close friends of ours. The guys at the Nantucket Hunting Association are throwing a great benefit dinner on July 14th at the White Elephant in conjunction with Ducks Unlimited. They are looking to build Nantucket's Shooting Park and raise money for Duck's Unlimited, both very worthy causes. If you can make it- great, we look forward to seeing you. If you cannot, I am sure they would love your support in anyway.
