Fishing Report: July 27, 2010

Bonito, Bonito, Bonito… They are here…phew…. I can not say they are thick quite yet, but four different captains hooked up on multiple fish at the bonito bar yesterday morning. Other reliable sources have seen fish around the harbor as well as out popping near Great Point. It is important now that Bonito season is starting to remind people about these fish. They are great fun to catch as they are speedsters when the hit and they will certainly make you work as they will chase you around the boat and are notorious for wrapping the anchor line. As for where to catch them, the Bonito Bar tends to be the place if you have a boat. The Bar is right through the opening off of Tuckernuck and Smith’s Point. The Bonito Bar only fishes for Bonito on the East Tide (Incoming.) If you are uncomfortable with this water, be cautious and bring someone who knows it or hire a professional. Also remember that boats ANCHOR on the Bar. Please be respectful and DO NOT troll or disrupt someone who is already fishing. There is PLENTY of water for all as long as we all respect the water and each other. As to what to use, yozuri’s tend to be the go to lure, but a lot of guys have success on bombers, the small sebille’s, needlefish and deadly dicks. Especially early in the season, make sure to have plenty of variety as the numbers are not significant yet and fish can be a bit picky. Also remember that these fish are leader shy so either tie directly to your line or get a fluorocarbon leader.
For the Beach fishermen who want to catch a Bonito, try fishing the west side of the rip on Esther’s or the inside of Great Point. Best for Great Point is early AM and Esther’s is that East Tide.

Other Fishing from the boat:
Bluefish are still at Great Point Rip although the fishing at the rip has been more consistent on the East Tide. The blues have been all over the east side of the island as well. While they have not been schooled up tight and showing slicks, there have been plenty of fish for those who drift off of Wauwinet or the outside of the Galls. Bottom Fishing for Black Sea Bass and Fluke has taken off and has been a big hit. The best bottom fishing on the island is on the East side of the island. A perfect day to me would be bluefish at the point, Bottom Fishing for Dinner for Fluke and Sea Bass (remember size restrictions) and wiring or even better Jigging for Striped Bass at Sankaty. A big hit recently has been the new Shimano Lucanis Jig. This is a jigging lure that has been working GREAT for Black Sea Bass and Striped Bass. If you can mark the fish on the bottom, drop a lucanis jig above the fish and drift, it will be worth your time once you hook up. When Jigging it is often better to be fishing braded line as you can feel ALL the hits.
Beach Fishing:
We are coming upon August and you will continually hear me shout Great Point’s Praise for both the consistency as well as the variety. I spent the morning in the shop yesterday (Monday) and Sunday night it seemed like everyone hooked up. It was not hot and heavy, but those who put in the time all saw fish on their lures and most landed. A variety of lures was being used and is always recommended. Metals seemed to out-hook the ballistics, especially when slowed down just a tad. As for where on the point, the inside seems to be the best in the AM, but as the day goes on the fish definitely swing around the point and then fall down along the eastern side. One theory is that those big bluefish feeding in the rip during that east tide tend to move off the eastern side during the west tide. They move down once the tide has ended and find enough food to stay.
As for Bass, Night-time is key. The point has been producing at nighttime (Outside) just as you get on the beach as well as the outside of the point. The other area that has been producing has been the rip off of Low Beach. Bass have been caught here the last couple of evenings and mornings on Jigs and bombers (Jigs have been working better especially with a small sluggo or Ron Z tail.)

***One last note is to help keep this island clean. Herb Mittenthal and a group called the “Clean Team” meet every Sunday Morning and clean up trash around the island. They are a GREAT Group who does great good. I know there are many who do this on their own as well. Please consider e-mailing Herb mittenthal@comcast.net so as to get on the team’s e-mail list. We should all give back to the island in some way and we hope that you would find beach cleanliness a great way of contributing. I do want to also remind that at Bill Fisher Tackle we do reward your efforts of cleaning up the beaches by giving you a bluefish plug in exchange for a bag of BEACH Trash. We will dispose of it for you and you get a plug. We think this is a Great way to get the kids earning their fishing equipment.

Tight lines,
