Fishing Report: September 1st, 2011

Dear Fishermen,

We hope everyone survived Irene without incident. It made for a fun day and we are thankful that we got just a taste of her. It has slowed our fishery though. After four days the water has started to clear up, and we continue to hear more and more positive reports everyday.

Bluefish are very close to the shore on the south shore. I was at Nobadeer last night and watched 2 guys catch 4 fish in a row, each. Great Point has also been producing a lot of bluefish.

With regards to Bass, in general a big storm like Irene will hurt the fragile South Shore bass fishery. There are many reasons, but the strong surf disturbs the fragile eco-systems that have materialized with such consistent weather. Pebbles and rocks start to get some growth, which attract small creatures, which will inevitably bring about bait- and bait means fish... We'll see how this plays out, but the strong south winds last weekend pushed Sea Clams all along the South Shore. I've heard of two fisherman who have taken some of the meat from the Clams and had some success with the Bass at night. Others are doing modestly well with the traditional lures.

We have not heard any positive reports of any exotics being caught since the storm, but there is now a lot more warm water in-shore. On Wednesday, we saw our first Spanish Mackeral jump clear out of the water and there have been reports of Albies popping... Get out to Great Point and be the first to catch them!

*Important*
We are including a petition that is being passed around to help control the Seal Population. Everyone has and is entitled to their own opinion about the explosion of the population of seals. Many on the Cape and Islands are upset about the negative effects the seal population is having on the fishing, the fishing economy, as well as the rise of the white shark population.

We plan on signing this petition and would encourage you to think about it. We have heard convincing arguments both ways, and no one should feel obligated, but please do make yourself aware of the issue and if you support what is being proposed, please get involved.

Lastly on a sales note, we've started to put some great product on sale. Stop by and you'll see Simms Gear, Shimano Boots, several 9 and 10 foot rods as well as Sustains at 25% off... Come and take advantage of opportunity while it lasts.

Many thanks and tight lines,
