Bill Fisher Tackle fishing report, Nantucket 8-1
Fishing Report: Aug. 1st, 2011
Dear Fishermen,
We have been blessed with wonderful and consistent weather for the last week. The Bluefish have done their job of seemingly getting bigger and more active, but the bonito have yet to do their job of filling in the bar in numbers that intrigue and wow us. That is not to say it is dead, as Capt. Cam and Capt. Nat have each caught multiple Bonito in the last few days, but it is not red hot. What is also interesting, is that the bait has yet to settle on the bar yet. It will and when it does, I think we can all expect interesting stuff to happen. We are also expecting Great Point to reopen at some point this week and when it does, we will let you know.
As far as Bass go, water has climbed into the 70 degree mark and we have had very few reports of Bass around the shoreline. A few fish were caught in the harbor at nighttime and Sankaty has produced fish, but otherwise the inshore Bass fishery has turned off. Capt. Corey did have a few spectacular days on the Eastern Rips over the weekend, so there are fish still out there still eating the squid that are around.
With the slowdown of Bass fishing, people have migrated to bottom fishing and we continue to hear success stories. People are fishing both bait and jigs on the eastern shore and recording big numbers of Fluke, Black Sea Bass and Capt. Carl and Cam have each caught trigger fish this week. The best part about bottom fishing is the excitement of the hook-up and the anticipation of what is on the end of the line!
As far as bluefish, they are still at great point, along the Eastern Shoreline and along the airport. The August migration of fish into Old Man shoal has also taken place, which provides some great visuals for those that appreciate seeing fish in the waves and love sight casting. Be sure to bring plenty of plugs though, if you plan on fishing here as the raw numbers of fish tend to damage the equipment pretty quickly.
In regards to offshore, Tuna are still being caught consistently off of Chatham, although the numbers now are not what they were last week. These fish have received a lot of pressure in the last week and there has not been any crazy weather to stir the bait up.
As mentioned last week, this is the time to get out on the water and bend a rod. Appreciate bluefish for their aggressiveness, their athleticism and their all round fun action. Introduce your kids to bluefish, so that you can get them hooked on fishing.
Tight lines and stay in contact with the shop to stay on top of the bonito situation!
