    Best bait well?

Hi, i'm new to the site and have just gotten into tuna fishing. I'm looking for a live well system that works good. What do most people here use? should i make one out of a polly barrel? or buy one like kodiak? thanks Dan

Order yourself a "chem tank" from Bobby Boyle down in Lighthouse Point, FL. You can get them in 50 or 100 gals. They are round and work perfect for all types of baits. I keep pogies, bluefish and scup alive all day long! The tank comes bare with no fittings so you can hook it up any way you wish. A few fittings from West Marine and you are all set. The tank will run you about $275 and the hardware and hoses about $75. I run it off my salt water washdown and it works great. It been worth every penny. Don't waste your time with a small one, and make sure it is round in shape.

Just get a plastic 55 gallon drum, you can usually get them for free, they are round, and plenty big.

Most important thing is that it is round so the bait doesnt beat itself up. Most use plastic drums of various sizes.

55 gallon drum, i put mine on the deck and have a drain hose go over the side and i fill at the bottom with a 800gph livewell pump, my deck always tends to flood when its rough out though, scuppers fill with water and waves wash over...but i have a notched transom for 2 outboards so that doesnt help either

Kodiak makes a decent well. It all comes down to the pump and the flow of the well. Have you found any that you are considering? Maybe we can do a pro and a con on it and give you a better idea of what is what

Yup, i found a white 55gal polyethylene barrel with a 23" dia and it's 38inch tall with a lid. I was planning on fixing it to the barrel and cut out a area from the lid and put in a plaxy glass lid. Run a high speed pick up into the barrel and also have a high flow pump with a outflow near the top. What do you think?

I know it is against what everybody else preaches but I think round baitwells are awful for pogies. My hiarchy of shapes is as follows - Oval, Rectangular, Round, Square. I will never own a round baitwell for tuna or bass fishing with pogies.

    Thumbs up

I will say that my retangular one in the deck of my seacraft does GREAT with the pogies!

    Bait Well

Built the attached from a plastic barrel. It will be run from the wash down pump. Just trying to decide how high to put the drain outlet because I don't want it splashing all over the place. I guess if it does I can always clip down the lexan cover, we'll see.
