    Beaut plus bonus 8/27

Played hookey, ran east for a solo day OTW last Thursday. There was hardly anybody out there - no fleet ever formed that I saw, anyway. Beautify day, tho a bit bumpy to start. Minimal radio chatter. Hooked up and landed 62'er on a slow sluggo WTFB at noon. Score one for the mosquito fleet.

So I'm sitting there recovering from my hyperventilating after boating the fish when I spot something floating in the water. Looks like a squid shell. I grab it up and it proves to be the entire stinger rig (from a spreader bar I assume). Black, 20" long, big ass stainless steel tuna hook, floats inside. Looks pristine except for some tooth marks in the shell and some abrasions on the hook. Anyone recognize it? There has gotta be a story behind it. Found within spitting distance of BC.

    Nice job.

I had that happen to me last year, the swivel came undone as I was letting the bar out - for the first time - brand new bar - gone. I did not use floaters.

    Much more careful these days.

    Fin,
Had that happen on one of my FO bars. They used those swivels that are like a scissor...they claim they can't open, but I think there should be an * with a footnote "can't open under load"

The reason that I suspect a better/longer story than that is because of the abrasions on the hook - down at the bottom of the J and only on one side. Appears to have been the rub zone for a row of teeth.

My imagination has a nice fight going on with some sort of failure in the gear right at boatside two feet out of gaff range . . . after an hour battle . . The angler's first tuna . . . teenage girl, maybe . . .flew all the way from Ohio to tuna fish . . . Straightened out snap swivel or equivalent as this rig has no damage anywhere. The leader has a solid ring waiting to be attached to something! Or more likely as you say, a stupid swivel not closed!
