We fished the area South of the BC today from 6:45 AM to 1PM. Did not see any tuna, did not mark much that looked like tuna. Lots of guy complaining on the radio (should have been here yesterday), a couple claimed to have caught.
About 25 boats in the area total. Saw nobody go tight.
We did have several large bass on the 13" squid bars.
Water temp ~63. Bait and whales present but scattered
I know of 2 boats that were out there. One boat got 2 fish both around 50" and the other got shut out. I did hear that there were a lot of large bass hitting the rigs.
We were in 200'-300' feet of water. After 300' no life. Bait was most concentrated around 230' and the boats claiming action were in tighter. Clear day wind North 10-12 knots.
I really have not figured out how tuna mark on my E120 sounder yet. No lighting bolts or boomerangs on the screen all day although we did have some solid red marks from 50-150' down.
Personally, I am really down on the bite to the East as I think there is too much fishing pressure there these days. I had 3 skunks there last season. Think that any future BFT efforts will be focused to the south of MV. We had one really good trip there (out of 1 try) in August with not a boat in sight and it is only 35 NM from port (I ran almost 80 NM each way yesterday and Monomy sucked in the morning wind against tide).
One other annoying thing about fishing there is all the yahoos on channel 68. Some guys are really confused about it. VHF radios are for exchanging real info. Message boards like this are where you do your useless bragging....
Fishing pressure???? You think there is fishing pressure out east in June? Come back on a Saturday in August. The one thing about a radio is the on/off button. There is always a few guys who go over board, but there is intel to be had. I have not had a skunk there yet this season. I have marked a ton of fish this year, lots of fish. There is no shortage of tuna fish out east. Don't give up yet brother. Capt. Eric
I own two boats that I fish out east. One is a green 26ft Steiger craft named "Tuna Fever" and the other boat is a 38ft Henriques named the "Tammy Rose". I fish the big boat alot more. We use "Tuna Fever" for family and friends/fun trips. I jinxed myself big-time..... I got skunked this morning 0-2 and lots of bass and blues. Real slow bite today only a few fish caught.... the fish gods spanked me for my words!?!? Capt. Eric
We passed right by the Stieger a couple of time Wed I think.
I would be very curious as to your observations on the difference between how the big diesel fishes vs the outboard. I just switched from a downeastlast year and can't seem to get the outboards dialed in on bluefin. The only decent day I had out East I ended up fishing a canyon spread and outfished most of the fleet on a slow day. The bigger squid at 4 knots just dont seem to be doing it. I only got one BFT on big squid last season in 4 days.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Don't like burning 140 gallons on a skunk....
I don't fish big squids. I fish mostly 11in squid on 3ft bars. I did great on the Steiger craft last season with over 30 tuna to the boat, we had several double digit days. I fish 5-6 rods and the boat raises fish great. Don't get me wrong, my Henriques is the machine, but the Steiger craft holds it own. Capt. Eric
