July 22 – Lots of Bass, 3 Keepers, Winter Flounder


TODAY: Dozen Bass, 3 Keeper Stripers, Winter Flounder
On board this morning I had Duxbury legend, “Mr Bill” Thomas for a half-day charter. After yesterdays amazing number of fish in the bay on the worm hatch, I had high hopes we’d find bass today in good numbers. We were not disappointed! At first light, we headed for the Kingston Bay area and found bass in the exact same spot as yesterday. They were schooled bass with keepers mixed it. Most were subsurface, down about ten seconds, with a big bass smashing bait on the surface once in a while. We put out some cut bait and then started working the light tackle. The bass hit the light tackle consistently, including our first keeper of the morning. After some time, a fish finally picked up the bait and it was also a keeper. A third keeper hit the light tackle a short time later and a possible fourth keeper also hit the LT, but we did not measure that fish before releasing it.

We moved around the bay and tried four more spots for bass without a hook-up. We then decided to give winter flounder fishing a try in July. I set up in a spot that my father use to take me to when I was just a child. I have fond memories of those trips and we went to the same spot. Guess what? Flounder still go there and we boated three flatties in no time on clams fished on the bottom. Around 10:45am, we called it a great morning and headed in. It was really nice out there again today and the fish were in the bay in decent numbers on the half-tide incoming. But they were most active at first light, as usual.
