We were the only boat there all day, had a great slick going and watched a boat approach from the east around 3pm, bear down on us, and get within 100 yds. I was getting my spinner w/ butterfly jig out of the rack and it was gonna get bounced off his hull at worst. As I was doing that my buddy was waving his arms, and flagging him away, he did NOT want to be any part of my plan !! The boat finally yielded and peeled off, just out of casting distance!! WTF??? I couldnt believe with all that water, NOONE around, this guy trolls up the slick that close. I wonder how close he would have come if my buddy wasnt doing his flagging dance??
Anyways the boys had a grreat time, everyone caught sharks, and a cooler full of mako steaks. Water was FAC, & 4 14 yo boys and their dads had an outstanding day!

    Sorry for the delayed post....

Took my dad out for his first shark trip and planned to head to the Banana, but the cool water moved south overnight, so we targeted a break near the Inside Fingers. Picked up some fresh blues at Musky after first light and were tempted to chase some bones, but we continued south. Setup and had a pup blue within 20 minutes on a 15LD. Good first fish for dad. One hour later long ballon disappears and the 80 starts singing with 18#s set at strike. We are all thinking the same thing: mako. Fish runs horizontal and dumps about 150 yds before I get the rod snapped into the harness on my dad. Fish continues a strong run straight out and my dad starts to make on her a bit. 25 minutes later we are about 30 feet from leader without ID and she makes another run. This happens two more times. Finally, at leader we ID an 11-12' female blue. She never went down, like most blues. Clean release and she swam off. We were all disappointed at first, with thoughts of steaks on the grill, but the smile on my dad's face was worth more than any meat fish.

We then made the tough call to abandon the slick after hearing a lot of chatter on the radio about mahi, BFT and makos at the Dump. Motoring over we watched temps climb from 70, to 72, 74 then 76. West of the 31 Fathom Hole we saw a large mako clear the water three times. We set a quick slick and worked the area for an hour, but no love. We then trolled to mid bank at the Dump and worked north to the Fingers in search of cooler water. We continued to record 76, then 77 and finally 78 at the Claw. We emptied the chum on Southwest Ledge and played with small mahi under gear just south of Nomans.

Great day on the water, FAC and sure as hell beats working, as my dad says.

    Rob,

That was probably the same fish I had in my tuna spread on Friday. It bumped into a few lures and swam off when I threw the spinning gear at him. Glad you got him or I was gong after him this week.

Might go Tuesday if I can get a weather break....

    Mike
