    backing or no backing ?

    I have to fill 4 reels (2 conventionals 50s and 2 spinnings).
My original plan was to fill all those with 100-150 yards of Trilene mono 60 lb as backing and then wrap some PPro 65 lb over it and complete with Seaguar 80 lb fluoro leader.

The guy at Belsan Bait is suggesting me to go with 80 lb on the conventionals. I already have a full spool of the Trilene BG 60 and would like to get some feedbacks on my idea of putting this as backing or not ?

By the way, we will fish on all brand new Okuma stuff:

    1 Cavalla 50 W 2 speeds
    1 Titus Gold 50 W 2 speeds
both on Oceanic 6 ft 40-100 class AFTCO roller guides rods

    1 Salina 65 and 1 Salina 80 spinnings
both on Cedros Speed Jig 7 ft 50-100 class rods

This will be a good test if we are lucky enough to meet Charlie !

We run 80 lb mono on our 50's. I think if you put mono on, then braid over the top, it'll eventually dig into the mono and either jam up or cut you off.

If you have the 60, put it on one reel and put 80 on the other reel.

The spinners you need braid, 65 lb and up

How 80 lb mono compares with braid when comes the time to fight hours on those fatty fishes this year ?
Also, reading all the reports with fish in the mid 70s hooked recently, I am a little afraid to be a little light using 60 lbs mono.
The best wouldn't be to keep the 60 as a backup spool ?

    Suggested Setup

The way we have our 50Ws setup on my father's boat and several others that I fish on is:

We have about 30-40 feet of mono (80-100lb would be fine) at the base of the spool to keep the braid from slipping. Just enough to cover the spool. Do NOT forget this step...it WILL slip if you put the braid direct.

Then, we have 130lb JB Hollow core/150lb PP HC, about 400 yds. I find the JB way easier to splice when re-doing our top shots throughout the season.

On top of that, we use 100-130lb Jinkai as a top shot. We use a little more top shot than normal just to keep the braid out of the riggers.

If you are going to be flying kites, I would use the 100lb mono, just because it will allow the kite to fly a little higher on light days and won't sag as much when in the air.

For our kite rods though, we use straight Braid (130-200lb) to a Spro swivel to 130lb Flouro. Straight braid definitely makes a world of difference on the kite...You can't have the best of both worlds though so its either one or the other...OR one of each.

We occasionally do troll with our straight braid rods and haven't had any problems, yet...

Going with straight 80lb mono isn't a bad move either. It is in-expensive, you still get decent yardage, and it is easily replacable. Pete won't steer you wrong at Belsans. I have known him since the 6th grade when I was his first bait boy...

    Thanks,

We will not fly kites. Plan to slow troll pogies and/or macks under balloons + standard trolling with plastics and X-raps 30s. Is it preferable to have a long top shot after the braid ? I was planning to run on 10-12 footer fluoro leaders tied with Jim Phillips knot (or triple surgeon if there's a rush !) just to prevent the braid to come in contact with the fish.

A thing that I forgot to mention to Pete is that we are ''tourist'' fishermen and would go for BFT 1 or 2 weekends / year at best. I don't know how big mono reacts when stored for a long time but my experience with light mono is not good.

We pretty much do the same thing but without the short mono under the JB Braid. After alot of research it has been proven that JB can be put on a spool directly without getting slippage if done properly. See basils web site for details.. http://www.bhptackle.com/pages.php?pageid=36 scroll down to the myth busting section

Don't know about JB but for sure, PPro and Fireline kinda line can slip on the spool.
I have light gears spooled with those and now I put a grey tape over the 3-4 first turns to make sure it stays in place.
