Atlantis Canyon report - 7/2

Get Reel headed to W Atlantis with a solid crew onboard on 7/2. Underway by 0645 and lines in at the west wall by 1115 in 72 degree blue water. Great run out at 24 knots with NW wind at my back. First fish on at 1140 and blood on the deck by 1155. Looking good. We then proceeded to troll for hours without a knockdown. Finally got a good knockdown but never came tight. Leader came back on a big pusher head lure full of bill rash. Damn! I went south to the upper 70 degree water, and then chased a pod of porpoises to the east for miles. Nothing! I got a call that west of W Atlantis was the place to be, so I picked up and rand back there. Trolled until dark and worked my way back to the west wall. We had another really solid hookup that was dumping a 30 when it became unbuttoned for no apparent reason. Set up for the night on the west wall with a west to east drift. Drifted across the canyon into upper 70 degree water. Nothing on two well rigged sword baits (seaworm loves to rig baits). At 0400 we had some good action. First, a big mahi showed up and then the spinning gear came out. Then we started getting 50# class YFT around the boat and had fun with jigs and chunks on light gear. Put 7 YFT and a few mahi in the box and then got back up on the troll by 0530. First bar going out gets wacked but not tight, WTF! There was definitely some bad voodoo on my trolling spread. We trolled all around W Atlantis and through skip jacks with nothing more to show for it. A couple knockdowns and some skippies, but trolling was not on my side this trip. Even broke two titanium bars. Need to re-rig, regroup and get back at it. Great weather, water, and crew made for a great trip. I expected more fish, but 8 YFT and few big mahi were enough for everyone to share on the 4th of July.

Some manta rays doing back flips were a cool site. A spotter plane over whale shark and someone swimming and videoing it was also on the radio chatter.

There were two fighter jets overhead on Friday doing maneuvers. That was the first time I saw that.

Its open season below the islands for air force maneuver's - over the year's I've been run on by Warthogs, buzzed by F-15's and watched a couple mock aerial combat's out there.

I miss the 9:30 AM wake up call. Anyone get the reference ?
