    Assist Hooks

Has anyone made their own assist hooks??

Looks like dacron with a spliced loop on one end, but I'm not sure what you would do on the hook end??

    John,
Been making my own for a couple of seasons. I have been using JB Hollow for the cord and it seems to work fine. The stuff they use for the retail ones is Technora which is a Kevlar blend borrowed from the sailing industry. Glenn's thread is very helpful and a must read.

Mike are you splicing loops on the ends, then inserting one of the the loops thru the hook eye and around the hook?

I have a spool of 300# dacron I was going to try....

It has been over a year since I made any but I think what I was doing was doubling the JB and threading it through the hook eye then I put it in my fly tying vise and wrapped it good and tight with thread and then glued them. After that I slipped some heat shrink over it just like the big boys. They seemed to be every bit as strong as the store bought ones and cost me next to nothing.

Be careful with the heat on the Spectra while shrinking the tubing. Spectra is very heat sensitive.
