Fathers were into the outdoors and kids went fishing with dads when not playing baseball or street hockey. You did not have to run far to put anglers on loads of fish, fuel prices were low and that organization called NOAA did not exist. Boats also stayed and fished their own back yards due to the year round fisheries that were allowed.
Today we turn the clock forward 30 years and we have record fuel prices, boats from many states fishing Stellwagen Bank and Massachusetts Bay and restrictions that will put most out of business. Today, dads work overtime to get by to heat the house, less kids have interest in fishing and hunting instead are into video games, the government shuts you out of ground fishing for 5 and a half moths and the competition is fierce with boats from NH, Maine, CT, RI and NY all fishing the same grounds. There are only so many anglers around to fish and with reduced numbers on board it is hard to fill boats. Without full boats and fuel costs it is hard to make a profit in the industry.
Lynn is not the easiest place to get to (I did live there for 10 years as a kid) and places like Plymouth, Gloucester, Seabrook are all just minutes from the highway. I will miss seeing Capt Jim out there and he will do well where ever he fishes because he has the determination, knowledge and talent to make it work. I wish him the best of luck in NB and with some luck maybe a 20-30 passenger boat like the old Sea Wife could pull it off agian focusing on the inshore fisheries. I wish you the best of luck and welcome aboard Sportfisherman.com
