    Almost got my dream fish

on labor day i had the biggest fish i have came around, sun glare was directly in the kite bait, no notice and all of a sudden the rod spins around to the rear of the boat from facing the side and starts taking drag, i push it past strike which was set at 30lbs on an 80 with 130lb line and about a 400yd+ run and not stoping, friend takes over and i get to the helm, gets 3/4 to the backing, start the engines and make my way on to back down and then all of a sudden the line buries in the Dacron with 1/4 line left, breaks off in the mono. last time i have a tackle shop spin my reels, and first time i have seen dacron on this rod sense it was spun this winter, what a disappointment.

Sounds like it was not properly "wet packed". I used to do all my 130's myself. Drop the dacron spool in a 5 gallon bucket of water and using a glove apply as much pressure as you can and pack the reel as tight as you can. Another option I have heard but never used is to load the reel and head out on your boat and freespool all the line off the reel and then reel it all back in while the boat is running. I'm not to keen on that method because you might have 800 yards of line behind your boat.

I've done it a couple times intentionally and a couple times unintentionally (set the lever high enough on strike and turn on the clicker, please). I am not a huge fan of this method due to the salt buried in the line/spool. It is probably not the best thing for the reel. You can rinse some of it out, but you will never get it all out....

I don't know what it is, but, those fish have a way of exposing ANY weak link there is and using it to their advantage. I guess that's why they get as big as they do sometimes. Call it bad luck or whatever you want to its still a heartbreaker when it happens!

Just out of curiosity, assuming it was a giant, would you have had to release it?

Sorry to hear about that! I guess sometimes you have to do things yourself.

The fishing over Labor Day weekend once the hurricane went through was pretty good. A guy caught a citation dolphin and his first white marlin fishing on my brother's boat this weekend.

welcome and fantastic thread hi jack complete with excellent photo's.

And that has to do with the agony of defeat how....

I have been there with the Deep V dacron falling in and locking up myself - sucks because when you see the V forming and the line piled up on the sides there is nothing you can do....
