Hopefully that warm bubble will be fishy. Plan to be out there Thursday to give it a run. Most likely start up north and work my way south into the warmer stuff.
Nice job Lawrence! See you on the docks this week.
Larry,
Please tell me your secret to keeping a wahoo on the line? We've been bitten off now six times, just this year. The last two were on the same swimmer in the canyons. The first one got the double belly hook; the wahoo sliced through the 1/8" braided stainless cable. Then on the next trip, another hoo got the tail hook that also had 1/8" braided stainless steel cable. We are loosing the arms race to the wahoos......help.

your milage may vary.
I typically double crimp lures I care about like this to give me a chance. This one caught a white and 2 wahoo 2 trips ago; the chafe gear was chewed but not cut; the long G crimp was a mess, the exposed leader between the pair of crimps was frayed but not cut and it held up.
I can't find a picture of my other method I use on precious lures which is to add a couple of those oblong green beads between the two crimps to protect the double line.
My theory is that if you give the teeth something hard and raised like a crimp or bead it keeps the teeth on the metal or bead, not on the line.
Of course the other alternative is a 3" trace of wire to a small snap swivel rigged inside the lure.
I've tried wahoo shield in the past unsuccessfully. This is not a testament to their product but more to my rigging ability of said product. I just couldn't get the stuff to work right. But it probably works if used correctly.
Maybe a combo approach would work??? Go with Larry's Douple crimp. In between the top crimp and the bottom crimp place a few more crimp sleeves... just don't sqeeze them down. That way you have metal running losely along the mono.
What do you think? Would it work?
Mike
I think that would work. You just need a shield to keep those razors off the mono. Just have to make sure the spacing doesn't screw up the hook position in the skirt.
Well, I'll give it a try before next weekend. However, its pretty sobering when you see 1/8" stainless cable sliced like a utility knife goes through shrink wrap!! Maybe we will also try going with the single strand wire rather than the multi-strand. We'll say a prayer for a corner of the mouth hook set too.![]()
that little Mako ******* looked frickin' angry!
little lethal SOB!
