8/2 Block Canyon to Middlegrounds – Nice weather!

Did a day troll on Saturday between Block Canyon and the Middlegrounds. You know when a report starts off with nice weather that there just isn’t much to say about the fishing. Water temp was a generic 78.4 degrees for most of the area fished. Some slight breaks we worked, but fish were spread out and sparse. There was a fair amount of life with pilot whales, porpoises, sunfish and some huge manta rays breaching. We had three rods go off at about 1030 in the middlegrounds and ended up with three small YFT between 20 and 40 pounds. We continued to work the area with no success. Trolled in the deep and up on the flats. A fair amount of boats in the Middlegrounds with some chatter of a few bigeyes taken. We picked up about 1300 and headed into a warm edge of water about 20 miles due south of Ryan’s horn. We picked one YFT from this area on the troll. The highfliers we checked out were not holding any mahi. We even pulled up to a few and threw some chunks out to see if anyone was home. Final tally for us was 4 for 4 on small (40 pounds and under) YFT. No mahi, and no marlin raised.

On our way in we were heading straight into that nasty storm around 20 miles south of Montauk at about 4:30PM . High winds and heavy downpours, but no lightning. Took us a little while longer to get home by skirting the back edge, but no real problems. The maiden voyage on the 38 Out Island was a nice ride. Wish we could have got more blood on the decks though. Next time….
