8/17/08 Full Moon Bluefin

My jinx with the full moon is FINALLY broken.

Met Phil, a retired coastie and my boat guy from East Marine, Falmouth at the dock at 3AM and we were off for The Sword. A beautiful night. We were able to navigate most of Chatham Harbor WITHOUT a spot light. Hit the sword area a little after 5AM before the slack tide. Set up in 220' and found whales and porpoise all around us. Found a small "nervous" patch of water and zing, game on. Stuck the belt on Phil and he was on his first bluefin tuna. 20-25 minutes later, a nice 57" BFT hit the deck (and box) before 7AM.

Trolled and chased whales all over hell and gone for the next 6 hrs. I think this one was flipping us the fin. I chit you not, that's a real photo taken this AM, not photoshopped, just cropped.

When the late morning slack hit, bang, fish #2 strikes out of the blue. Est a 50", released. The BFT fishing continues to be pretty damn good.

The whale was flipping the full moon the fin.

Nice going chum, take it easy or else there will be no tuna out there for me to catch, if I ever do finally get one.

Nice work

Oh yeah that's the flip off.

I would consider it another score for the book of life.

Getting flipped off by a whale certainly tops some road raged punk on 495

Nice work. Congrats on the full moon fish. We whacked a twin of your fish at the double LL's on Saturday and caught a smaller 34" fish on Sunday. Lots of fish taken on Stellwagon between Friday and Sunday so maybe the full moon myth has been busted????????????????????????

34"? That's the 1st small one I've heard of north of the islands; good news for the run and gun crowd if they move in.

Yeah Larry, there were hundreds of the little guys rocketing out of the water during the slaks on saturday all up and down the bank. We caught ours trolling. He attacked an 11" squid bar like it was his last meal. I tagged him for the tag a tiny program and let him go in great shape after a few quick pics. Full report and photos to come as soon as CVS can figure out how to properly burn the photos to a CD and not give me a blank CD.

Maybe those little ones are the fish that were at Block Island 2 weeks ago. Doesn't seem to be many around now....
