    8/15 - Below the Lanes - YDKIYDG

    and sometimes YWYSATD!

We did catch the cutest little mahi you could imagine in 8 hours of trolling all sides of a 74 degree thumb sticking up into 68-70 degree cooler water. S of the Banana and N of Atlantis.

We did not see tuna; we did not catch tuna. We did not see billfish, we did not catch billfish. We saw little life.

We found what was 3-5/E8-10 in the cooler water exploded in the warmer water to 4-6's and at least 10-15.

Glad I got that over with...

.... I am now uncrossing my fingers and abandoning the hope that, that particular water finger pushes into range for the small fry fleet.

That would be incredibly short sighted based on 1 report from one boat trolling one day in less than optimal trolling, sighting or fishing conditions.

I could have missed the mother lode by 1 mile, or as I suspect the bait was blown off the hard edge by the incessent NE/E winds.

I'd go back there tomorrow on a FAC or mild SW and bet I could do a lot better.

we got nice yellows from that water last week. After picking pots for mahi, we trolled south and got into them 18 miles from the edge. Plenty of miles without a sniff, but happy to eventually have to clean the cockpit!!!

The weather forecast yesterday calling for 3/5 south of Nomans, and even 2 feet in the sound had us set to go fluking and bass fishing around Gay Head and Nomans. Left Mattapoisett at 6 on FAC water. Expected some rollers in the sound, but again FAC. We decided to head to Nomans first, then double back to the #31 area, because the conditions were so good. As we got closer to Nomans, and still great conditions, we just kept going and continued on towards the Claw where we've had some success recently with BFT and Mahi. For several weeks and several trips we've found this area full of life and fish, and those traveling further south have found the dead sea. Over the course of the day the seas increased to an honest 5', but spaced so far apart that it was comfortable, but limited visability somewhat. We trolled that area, then south and east some, over towards the star, and back through the inside fingers, and back to the claw. Over the course of the day we saw zero bait, very few birds, and it was a tie as to what was the biggest fish we saw; the apparent "twin" to the mahi that LB caught; or the triggerfish that followed a cast at a high flyer. One of the most uneventful days on the water in I can't remember when. Last year everyone was catching YFT and Wahoo in cooler water around the Dump and Fingers; this year we have unreal temp charts with substantial temp breaks and some days the water seems virtually void of life

We fisher the Falmouth Grand Prix this weekend and found pretty good school bluefin fishing all inside if the 30 fathom line from the Star to Gordens Gully. The fish were 25-40 lbs. but pretty consistent. Bait was showering everywhere. We made the mistake of running to the lanes and found dead lifeless water and ran back inside. We also did some sharking in 5 hours we caught and released 6 blue sharks and two makos (one was no more than 30lbs. the othe closer to 90lbs.) Stay close and you will have some decent action.

I am sure you could do better, you always do. But I couldn't....

All the 2 pound mahi you would ever want. One was wearing a shirt that said, "I visited Skipjack, and all I got was this stupid tee shirt."

I stayed pretty much on the cold side of the break. Maybe I should have played in the warmer water and looked for marlin based on Capt Kev's report. Oh well, monday morning quarterbacking on my part.

As my buddy said, it doesn't matter if Hydro was the place to be. Maderia is also the place to be. But we are not going to either... Given it was a day trip, we gave it a solid effort.
