77" BFT on a JIG
Mike from Peace Token Tackle in NY came up today for his first shot at popping/jigging a bluefin off CC Bay....it won't be his last trip, I'm sure.
Fish was hooked on a metallic sardine jig, 8.5 foot G-Loomis jig stick, saltiga 50 with PE braided line. Fight lasted past the 3 hour mark, we had the fish at color for 2 plus of those, tough getting that last 50 feet with wispy gear. Special thanks goes out the crew of FOUR BUOYS, who hopped on to help with end game, as I had of course left the poon at home . What a great feeling sticking the iron into this one. Fish taped out at just a hair over 77", estimated at 270 pounds.

very impressive. That size fish calls for a 50, not 50# line

Now THATS a pig on a jig! What size leader were you guys using? Any tips for getting a fish of that size up the last 50'? I can imagine that it must be really hard with that sized tackle.

Mike worked that fish to the boat in about 40 minutes, but then we had color for 2 plus hours. The last 50 feet on wispy tackle is murder on the angler. Mike had no belt, horrible leverage, and light line. Lots of things can go wrong on outsized fish that are on the line for extended periods, plenty of easy ways to pop it off, but angler and gear all held up. The only way to get the fish into range is to work it up on its death circles, holding line when you can, and using the rod tip to try and lift the head on its next pass. The leader was 80 pound floro, jig was a YO-Zuri Sardine 7 ounce.

Been there/aware some pertty good boat handling went on
I'm in awe of that last 50 feet from a boat handling perspective as I have been on the wheel of a 3 hour 6 or 7 footer myself that was accidentally jigged up on a cod rod. I eventually mis shifted and ate the line in a prop.
There is nothing an angler can do in terms of leverage; there is a ton of unstated work the captain has to do to keep the angler in the game as the fish death circles directly below the boat. |
