New Penn VSX'S?

Hey T,
Are those the new Penn 50 VSX's you are fishing?
If so, how do you like their performance to date? The size is nice, do you have them spooled with spectra with top shot of mono?
Nice trip!

Nope they are Penn 30 VSW's and 70VS's. I've run the 30's for several seasons with flawless performance. The 70's are new this season so we used 5 of them on this trip to try them out, they easily handled the YFT.

Both reels are spooled braid w/ Basil Wind-ons.

30's are 700 yards of 100# braid w/ 200 yards of 50# mono
70's are 800 yards of 200# braid w/ 200 yards or 100# mono

OK, the 30's are great size for charters, easy for everyone to handle.
The 70's will whip just about everything in the canyons very well, only challenge would be if you hook up with a "big" blue girl. That would be a good problem to deal with.
I just shipped 4 70vs, 2 50VSW's, 2 16VSX's and 2 975's with custom rods back east for the Monster Shark Tournament
You running for tuna Wed that week? We are looking at it if conditions are good.

70's

I am a decent and experienced angler, 5'7" and in reasonably good shape but I find the 70's are too big for my small frame. No matter how I adjust the harness either the weight or the size wears me out. Its happened 2-3 times; at this point if I'm on a boat with a 70 or 80 I just watch if it gets hit

I'll take my chances with 30's and 50's spooled with a zillion yards of braid. I'd be more worried about a big eye than a blue marlin. We got out asses whipped by one on a 30 4 or 5 years back - it was not pretty and eventually broke off after an interminable up and down battle that we never had enough drag to finish the game.
