7/26/2009 report - SWC, Just east CC point
After getting bait at 0400, we headed out of Scituite Harbor and started to see life on the SWC. We trolled two pogies on 150# jinkai smoke blue with Gama 11/0 hooks for a couple of hours. No joy. We had a hit, but nothing significant.
We then steamed just east of the point of CC and put in again. Same results, same rigging.
At 1300 we decided to call it and head for the ramp. On the way back, we saw whales, birds and bait. We put the two pogies out again - hearty little fellers!
Nothing. We pulled out and headed home. I managed to get seasick mildly twice and recover. That is HUGE for me.
Do you think if we had been pulling 130# fluorocarbon rather than 150# smoke blue Jinkai, it would have made a difference or am I splitting hairs? Any and all input appreciated.
On the way back, we gave way to a nice Blue center console who radioed me he had a fish on. We altered course and continued. About 10 minutes later, I hailed that captain back and he said they were still working it. I hope she was a beauty. Any chance that person is on this board?
The fog made me respect the ocean more and appreciate my radar.
I think the fish are getting pretty 'line-shy'. We have been using the usual tricks to get around it. A week ago I had a couple drifted pogies out on 130 flouro and they got boiled but never eaten. I did get bit on 80 flouro yesterday.
Also, there are fish all over the bank. Work away from that fleet.
