Oh - the obligatory triggerfish story. Blowing through the Lanes at 25 knots I saw a mortar shell explosion 100 yards ahead and to my starboard; as i came up on it a basking shark flew out of the water in an arcing and twisting ungainly full breach to explode water in what seemed to be a 20 yard circle. I slowed in time to see it breach a 3rd, 4th and 5th time, Jimmy and I watching in complete amazement that something that large could get so much air.
After waiting for more I started to power back up and noticed a night run horror, a 12" X 12" by 3' timber block which had no doubt been a chock of some sort on a container ship. Hit that at speed at night and you get hurt and your boat sinks. Shudder...
Anyways - we pulled up; cast at it hoping for a mahi, but all that came out were trigger fish.
There you go Steve - happy?

Another great post !
Larry, you should be looking at writing a book; perhaps a couple of books! 70+ canyon trips, each with its own unique story that you have a gift for telling; you need to share with more than read about it here.
Contemplating our first canyon trip and concerned about fuel capacity as well. How many miles logged going & coming, and how many trolling in a "normal" canyon trip?
You answered my question recently concerning what you like to put in front of your Ballyhoo rigs. Do you have a preferred method of rigging the bait itself? The various methods range from those crazy screw on spring things, to procedures best performed by a surgeon, and everything imaginable in between. Eyes in, or taken out? Weighted bait, or only the lure? Wire, Mono, or Flouro? Hook size?
I like my TLD 25's as well, & think they're way underrated. Good basic tackle to start with and expand upon. I wish I could figure out how to get the big fish to hit the 50's, and the small ones on the TLD's. This year a 31" to a 50 2 speed spooled with 80#; last year an 85# to the TLD spooled with 40#. Broke the rod, but landed the fish. Great fun with the small size & weight of the tackle.
I can't wait to read about your next trip.

I manage my canyon trips and fuel by hours running and hours trolling.
I know I burn 20 GPH at ~3000 RPM and a bit less (18-19) at 2850. I also know I sip fuel trolling; perhaps 2 GPH, 2.5 GPH max.
W/ a 210 gallon tank that holds 220 if you squeeze and 200 *usable* gallons I plan for 8 hr's run ( 160 gallons) and 10 hr's troll ( 25) gallons and to come back having burned 185 and 15 usable ( or 3/4 hr) in the tank.
I also know I can top off at Menemsha or OB on the way back if I'm low.
~30-40+ trips to the Atlantis's and Block make me very comfortable I can do an overnight there/no bladder but am limited to staying in 1 place with no spare fuel to explore.
If, on the other hand I carry a 50 gallon ( 2.5 hr steam) bladder - I can go to Hydro or Veatch or 15 miles S of 100 fathoms.
Figure your best case and worst case burn per hour and plan around how many hours you can steam/troll....The key is to *stop* when your at your budget on the way out; not run another half hour looking.....

Larry,
I know that you can boat a trigger fish, but did you take any home? You're old partner in crime swore up and down his declared love of eating triggerfish. For some reason, I have yet to roll and dice and put one in the cooler for the taste test. Maybe this summer!
