After my last trip you all know that come this time of year I always seem to fall victim to the dreaded skunk. But what you may not kn ow is raight about this time Chris Kirby and his Dad roll into town bringing some SERIOUS motivation and some SERIOUS skills! There is nothing better when your in a slump than to know that the relief is coming in a big way. The Kirby's are the big time bullpen that you can count on!
The guys rolled up to my house around 0500 and they were ready to rock and roll. It's been WAY too long and you could almost feel the anticipation that Kirb's was bringing. We splashed the boat in Bourne and ran out towards the canal. It wasn't long before the guys washed the skunk off the boat as we hit several groups of birds and school bass. We decided to leave them to find better. With the skunk off it was all good!
We ran for a while and found a bunch of small flocks of birds over some big schools of bluefish. We crushed them for a while and after our fill of 10# blues it was time to leave them to find better.
I hit a spot I was hoping was going to be holding some bigger bass. I checked it out with the sonar and it was looking pretty thin. A buddy of mine that guides saw me in the area and told me to give it a go dispite the lack of fish showing. He said the area was giving up a few fish even though they were not marking. A huge thanks to him for that little nudge! We sent some Spro's south and soon Kirby was on a tear! While Mr. Kirby and I picked aways at a few fish, THE KIRB MAN COMETH and in a BIG way! He went into a trance like state and began to put on a clinic of deep water jigging the likes of which I've never seen. He could not miss. Fish after fish, all keepers, many over 20# all fat and well fed. All Mr. Kirby and I could do was watch in awe as Kirb's slayed multiple fish on every drift.
When the dust had settled the number of fish Kirby put into the boat was impressive. In a short time he managed somewhere around 30-40 fish by himself and every one was a keeper. Mr. Kirby and I combined for a dozen and a half at best but we were just not in that zone that Kirby was in.
Final tally around 75 bass for the day and a couple dozen bluefish. The lure of choice for the bigger bass was a 6oz Spro Jelly Jig white on white. I tried the butterfly jig side by side with the Spro, there was no comparision. The Spro outfished the butterfly 10-1. The water ranged from 10' to 80'. The fish were all puking up the same sandeel/rainbait as they have been for the last few weeks. It's getting bigger and now it's 3-4" long.
Overall just a spectacular start to a 4 day fishing weekend for the Kirbman! My digital camera battery was DOA, so I shot a little HD video of a few fish just as a tease. It can be found here http://www.vimeo.com/1052150
