    5/15 at the Race

Headed out Sat morning at 6 am. with my buddy Cliff with Sunbeam crew to try get a couple bass. Got out at about 7:15 am. at Wilderness pt. to try a couple drifts while the rip set up at the Race. Nada. So, headed over to the Race, Valiant Rock area. Just as we started to set up for our first drift, it started to blow like a SOB!! A solid 20-25kts. with some higher gusts. Wind against tide, that always sucks. I was 3-waying swim shads and couldn't even hold with 24 oz.!! Did manage 1 keeper 29.5 in bass this way. Had to switch to a diamond jig. First 10oz, then 12oz, finally 14oz the heaviest I had with me. Could only manage about three drops and then had to start over because my line was too horizontal. Got one more bass, on the fall, this way. This one was 34in, 15lbs or so. Good enough for the pool on the boat though. Small pool, small crowd though. I trade that anyday. Ended up with the 2, my buddy Cliff 0. The rest of the boat 4. 6 fish total, REALLY TOUGH conditions.

Decided, what the hell, its a beautiful day(a little windy but nice), and the second trip is only half fare! Gonna try it again! Got back out and the wind calmed a little and we now had wind WITH tide. We were ripping, but were able to fish a lot better, just shorter drifts. Hit just about the same spot this trip with only about 10 maybe 12 boats in the whole Race all day. Thats nice!! Took a few minutes for the rip to set up and decided to to try out the swim shad thing again. I've done pretty good with them early in the season in the past, until the blues show up. Got a couple of shorts right off the bat. The boat got a couple of 30in range fish and the action seemed to be picking up a little. Then it just quit. I noticed a good size flock of gulls forming and then they started to dive but no fish busting, we drifted right into them. I started to do another drop and got bit about 20ft. down. There was a huge school suspended about 20 to 30 ft. down. We picked away at the school for a few minutes, 3-4 drifts, then they started to scatter. I managed 3 more fish, nothing huge 30 or so in. The boat got a few more. Swim shads were out-fishing diamond jigs at least 3 to 1. Headed south to Little Gull, Captain Bob extended the trip by about a half an hour so we could get a few more fish and we did. My buddy Cliff finally got one on the next to last drift, nice one about 36 in. and took the pool. I ended up with 6 keepers and 2 shorts. It was a grind-it-out kind of day, but fun nonetheless. Forgot the camera, sorry, next time. Hopefully some bigger fish too.

    Bass

Nice, I have not tried the 3 way swim shad thing. Sounds like a good idea. Went out front yesterday to load up on Mac's. Took some livies over to the beach and got a couple keepers in the 32 34 inch range. Dinner

    bartletts on the sunbeam 5/15

I fished a private charter on the sunbeam Saturday morning and had non stop action the entire time. 10 of us [father/son combination] snaped wire for 4 hours and boated around 40/50 stripers up to 36 inches. Didn't catch a single blue, but not complaining about it either. This was our 8th year in a row we fished on the second weekend of May, and haven't been disapointed yet. I sail with the sunbeam on their private charters about 8 times a year and never been disapointed.
