5/14 Report #3 (Third times the charm!)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I had two solid fishing trips under my belt by 1030 in the morning. By 1130 Bob Pink was changing from his work cloths in my garage and getting into something a little more.....waterproof The boat was fuled up and we splashed again at Bourne Marina. We ran out to the early morning action and found a few loose birds but not much of anything. We decided to run into some of the bays and look for pogies. The wind was cranking and if the pogies were there we sure didn't see them. Next idea was to check some late May big fish spots to see if they may have come alive early. They hadn't! We were a couple hours into the trip and we had barely made a few casts let alone caught a fish. The next option was to run a ways in the sloppy seas and check out what the islands had to offer. This turne do ut to be a good plan. We found a good flock of birds and a ton of willing bass AND BLUES under them. We hammered the fish for several hours, the fish were feeding on small 2" rainbait but they were suckers for a white Spro bucktail w/ a split tail pork trailer. Add in a couple sprays of Berkley Gulp Spray and HOLD ON! The fish were running 20" to 34" and the bluefish ranged from 12" to 30"!!!! There were some BIG blues in the mix. After a while we decided to leave the fish and see what else we could find. We ran for a few miles and found more birds. We set up on a small group of gulls and the results were outstanding! The fish were larger with most over 30". I was working the bottom when I felt something solid take the jig. It came to the boat easily, but when it saw the boat the fish left a hole in the water with huge swipe of its tail. We knew this was no school bass. After working it back to the boat I lipped my biggest fish of the season to date! It was 42" and right around 30#. The fish's gut was packed full of bait. I told Bob I wanted to break 40" today and we were able to make it happen. We continued to work the flocks of birds all the way back to the canal. We caught fish at every flock, some just small blues, some 30" bass and some a diverse mix. Finally at around 1800 it was time to finally call it a day. Final tally for the third trip of the day several dozen fish for each of us. Bob is on the bass board for 2008 in a big way. We had bluefish to 30" and bass to 42". Almost all the fish came on 2 and 4 oz. Spro white bucktails with white pork trailers and Gulp Spray. Even Bob started using the spray after a while. The water was 20-50' deep and the wind was howling most of the trip. Overall this season is progressing at a super pace. My first full day charter is tomorrow and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to put my sport on fish
