So,I'll freely admit my ignorance here.On my 130 st,I set the full drag,by going slightly further than bottoming out a 50 lb scale.I realize it's not scientific, but a 50 pound scale is what I have.I'll go further to demonstrate my ignorance to you fine folks.I've read(a lot of)books by commercials/charter Caps, who speak of fishing 90 lbs of drag.
Well,my brandy new 130vsx came with a signed qc spec sheet that said it tops out at 60 before losing freespool. How is it then, that guys are fishing 90 lbs?How do you hotrod an International?
While I'm baring my ignorant soul, drift fishing, with live baits,be it pogies, blues, scup, whatever, how many pounds of drag?Last weekend when we went 0 for 2,I had the drags at strike.50 on the 130 with 200 lb mono, and 25 on the 80w with 100 lb mono.We were fishing live pogies,so getting it in their mouths wasn't an issue,I imagine with a larger bait, like a blue,I'd have to dial it way down,to afford the tuna the opportunity to get it all in.
I appreciate any and all advice, guys. Thanks in advance.Bobby.
Bobby, I use 35# on strike and seldom go over that. when the fish is close i even sometimes back it down a little depending the fish (Green etc) That's with 200 # or 300# mono. and a Super Mu Tu.
Sorry I wasn't more clear.I'm using 200 lb mono,drifting livies,flat,no kites,or ballons,so no dropback.I've never fished 90 lbs,only read about it being done,and yes,we're strictly hunting giants.Thanks for all your replies.
