Ok let me make sure I am on the same page, you had two Giants hit last weekend and did not hook either and you suspect it was your drag setting being too light? at 50lbs at strike. So your rod was in the rod holder on 50lbs when the fish hit your pogy, or did you have it backed way down and when he hit and was running you pushed it up to the strike setting?

Why 200lb line with 35lbs? Why not a smaller reel with 100lb or 130lb line? If 200lb then why not 60lb to 75lbs if its in the holder?

Just wondering. I useually fish with 50's w/ 130lb spectra at 32lbs.

don't forget

max 1/3 the strenth of the line at the stop with a full spool, as the spool empties out the force on the line increases as the diameter of the spool reduces. if you go above this & you get a large fish and the spool gets low & "snap". 50s with spectra will carry a large fish.

lets say full spool raduis is 3 " drag set at 35lb
when the radius gets to 2" the force on the line is 52.5lb
when the radius gets to 1" the force on the line is 105 lb
when the radius gets to 3/4" the force on the line is 140 lb 130 lb line just snaped with drag set at 35lb and 1.5" diameter
when the radius gets to 1/2" the force is 210 lb that would be a 1" diameter spool empty.

if you don't beleve the math try it with a small reel and heavy nylon string so the diameter will change fast and a spring scale

Oh do you mean like THIS ???

130 #class rod in the rod holder. SPOOLED !!!! and SNAP. with about 12 fathoms of line left. i was holding the reel handle with my right and the forearm with my left. When the rod exploded the line came down on the splintered glass and i thought i'd been shot.

wow!

What did you have on the end of the line a Finback or a super tanker, haven't seen a heavy rod snap like that? I am suprised the rod holder held and didn't tear out first, I have seen that.
