Best Catch: The next bite on a jig.
Wind on Connection

I was hooking up some new wind-ons the other day and thought I would break out the new camera to illustrate the correct way to do a loop to loop.

Believe it or not, if not done correctly, they can fail at the connection.

The first picture shows the wrong way to do it.

The second picture show the right way to do it.

I am in the process of building a few wind-ons. What lengths you are using for the mono and dacron? Is flourocarbon a waste on a wind-on?

Should I be using a swivel and then another leader to the jig or just crimp on a solid ring to the wind-on? It seems to me that the extra jig leader sould allow some more easily changed chafe protection vs. the more expensive wind-on, but it adds another connection.

Thanks for the advice.

Unless targeting tuna, just use a soft mono. If targeting tuna, then use flouro.

No, you should not be using a swivel out in front like a marlin leader. You can use a swivel right in front of the jig, as a substitute for the solid ring.

You should tie/crimp straight to the swivel or solid ring.

One is all I do. I don't know if its stronger than a cats paw, but I haven't experienced any failure yet, on jigging or giant tuna fishing.

I do know that if you do two, its easier to take apart, but I always just cut and retie my bimini if I want to take one apart.

I like 2 myself; the double-square prevents that possible drop-down hinging effect in picture 1. It is more difficult to take apart however, though many who only use one rev report no issues. I will stick with the double L2L, except when connecting braid to mono loop, in which case I would use 5 turns. Remember this case?

I've used the Basil recommended double loop to loop with perfect success over the past two years. I did watch a Dennis Braid video where he recommended a quad loop to loop connection.
