I am looking at getting my first jigging rod right now. Chris W conviced me in one of the other posts that the rod really makes the jig. That being said, I'm not sure if I want a spinning rod or casting ( Well actually one of each would be nice ) but I will probably start with a spinner. From everything I have been reading is that the cabo 80's are the proven performer. I guess then load it up with PE braid.

shamino saragosa is a popular mid price jig / bottom reel
its a new model. and matches up well with alot of the jigs and rods we use
i am not sure how the handle is you may want to upgrade to a bigger handle
the ones i have seen have the bigger handle
i just assumed they were upgraded

    Jigging reels

I have been high speed vertical jigging for over 10 years. Shimano stella's are good but tooooo much money. I went with the Penn 9500 but found them to fail often. I came up with a fix. It's at http://FISHinKONA.com/jigging.htm
Penn now has the 950ssm and I've been using them without a problem other than the handle breaking. They fixed it. Make sure the one you get has the stainless steel pin holding the handle knob on and not the brass one. I'm also a tester for penn and have been testing a new reel called a Sargus SG8000. They are now on the market! Very fast at 5.3 to 1 ratio.
As far as rods, I have some that are stiff and some that are not. It's really a personal choice. I've had bad luck buying a rod online. I like to bend the rod at the store to see if it meets my needs. Hope this helps.

No, the original post is in one of the other forums, but since it was a jigging question, I suggested posing the same question here, since some of the jigging guys post here. No posts have been removed and the original post is still in the other forum.

That happens to me sometimes also, I click the new posts button and don't look to see what forum its in.

This is probably the best explanation I have seen:

It comes down to what you want to spend. The Stella is by far the best spinning reel on the market and the prettiest.Better quality in every aspect, line capacity(500yd 85lb PE) better, smoother and sealed drag,lighter..2nd i would say the Diawa Saltiga line of reels.3rd back to the Shimano Saragosa great drag, plenty of line capacityand light.4th 760 Slammer, brute strength and the price. The Cabos only knock would be the line capacity and thats kinda big deal.Fin Nor,Gmann bought one to try and he said it now sounds like someone dropped metal in the garbage disposal after only a few trips. The new Spheros line has been upgraded i have no experience with them only the older models and i don't see those holding up the test of time.Good luck.

I'll have to put up my vote for the Penn Sargus SG8000 !!!!
In your line-up, I agree with your #1 choice. I disqualified the Saltiga because it's not a spinning reel. Although I havent tried the Saragosa, I'll put the Sargus in as #2 because of construction and price. I've been jigging with these reels every week (charter trips) for for about 7 months now and they're still as smooth as the day I got them. I'll put the Saragosa as #3 but after that, why bother. I agree that the Fin Nor is junk.

Penn just sent me some Captiva reels to try. I'll be using them for casting and jigging when I get them spooled up. Anyone had any experience with the 8000 ?
