What rod for a Daiwa Saltist STT50H?

I am purchasing a Daiwa Saltist STT50H reel and want some opinions as to what rod would be a good match. I would like to stay under $150 and $100 would be better. Also would 60lb braid be OK or should I go up to 80lb?

    Thanks

    Ryan,

As I mentioned ... I love the Shimano Trevala for the price or for even less go with the Barefoot.

Depending on what you are going to be fishing for I would definitely go with either 80 or 100 lb braid. 60 wont stand up to these big drag reels and reef donkeys. These jigs are expensive!

Yeah after all this talk about jigging I decided to bite the bullet. I have been looking at the Barefoot rods, will any do or is one better than the other? I also saw that Okuma has a rod, the Cedros CJ-C-601MH, do you know anything about that one? I have found it for about $70, is it a get what you pay for type situation?

P.S. I have not forgot about your offer, just doing a little research.

    Thanks,
    Ryan

No worries.... no skin off my back either way. Whatever you get I would get the heavy one. The barefoot is a great rod for the price. I dont know much about the Okuma rod but in general have had bad experiences with their company quality as a whole.

I have a Saltist STT50H loaded with 100 lb braid that I use for deep jigging here in the Gulf of Mexico. I put it on a 5' 8" Hopper Rod (purchased at Fishing Tackle Unlimited for $169) rated for 125 lb to 250lb line. It's extremely light, parabolic bend and I feel like I can lift a moose without fear of breaking the rod. They have lighter models of course, but I put this together to target the giant AJ's and Warsaw we have around our deeper platforms, but I think it will do a great job on our tuna as well. The only thing I may do is re-work the drag to get a little more tension, but I love the lightweight set up, and I think it has a sturdier feel than the Trevala rods.

    Good luck with everything.

Thanks, I will look into that. I am starting to wonder if the 50 is going to be to big for the Grouper and such that we have here.

The next bite on a jig.
My opinion that a 50 is too large for NC. A 40 will do everything you need here, including super deep dropping for snowies.

Its not a bad thing man. Just a little wider frame and bit bulkier of a reel. The 40 if i recall is pretty close to being the same as the 50.

There's really nothing wrong with having a heavier reel if you don't mind the added weight.

The only difference is the gearing. The higher gear ratio is not always best for cranking fish off the bottom. I have the higher (6:1 i believe) one and it's not as powerful but still gets the job done.

I also upgraded the drags to carbontex in it. Works real well.
