Wussy or not, I must give it a try. Don’t ban me please, I promise I will use my classic/manual reel/rod for shallower jigging.
I have an electric reel Miya Epoch CX-20 with the jigging feature. I would like to use it for extreme deep jigging, up to 1300-1500 ft or even more, as deep as the jig still will work and my sonar will mark bottom structures or even maybe fish.
Target fish are the usual deep species all you know : sword, BFT, AJ, grouper, dentex etc. Area is the Ionian Sea (Mediterranean, West Coast Greece). BTW, I don’t have many other options there as going deep, a shelf area is almost non-existing and doesn’t bear good size fish. 12-16 miles off beach I am at 3000ft depth.
I'm looking to find here any experience with extreme deep jigging, preferable with electric reels.
On my reel I have 3280ft / 0.024inch dia. / 236lb braid line, so with the line I’m fine I suppose.
What about jig/lure weights? How heavy do I need to go for what depth range?
With so much line out, the (believed negligible) stretch of the braid line may become a problem. I have been deep dropping at 1500-1800ft with this line, and bites are telegraphed with no problem, but this with lead weight of 8-9lb.
How will the jig work with that long line, and will it work at all?
The jigging features on the Miya reel offers enough options (speed, jerk length, pause etc.) to handle different conditions, but there must be a physical depth limit for successful jigging.
So what is the depth limit for jigging, and what must I consider for jigging the abyss.
