Taz ask Paul about the Calstar GF410.....I think. My brain is shot from cold medicine. It's a short little thing with good bend and lots of power. He showed it to me and he buiklds spinners out of it.

I actually got to play with my Mudhole 30-50 VJ blank with the Saltist 40HA levelwind on it. I tried casting with it with a 1.7oz Deadly **** tied onto the braid and did pretty well! When I cast it sidearm, kinda like a baseball swing, I was casting much farther than before, even with my spinning rods I had built! I will prob end up doing a shorty, like 5'6 or 5'8 spiral wrapped jigging rod first, and do up the spinner later on, maybe a longer blank for the spinner so I could use it for topwater stuff that is farther away, too. Will the Daiwa Saltist 40 hold up to Tuna, ie yellowfin 40-80#? I did the Carbontex drag upgrade, but would prob keep the drag in the high teens, lo 20's so I don't kill the anti-reverse.

Does anyone have pics of an Avet jx, lx, and hx side by side to compare the sizes??? I like the size of my Daiwa 40, maybe a little larger, but not too huge!

Ok. Did some more shopping around to narrow it down. I will most likely do up the 6'6" spiral wrapped one first since I could double it as a Cod Rod and use my existing Daiwa reel on it. Most of the Cod guys I talked to said a 6'6 to 7', 20-50ish blank would be fine for cod, heavier is OK too.

I am looking at blanks like the 765M, ML, L Graphiters Tuna series (40-100#, 40-80#, 30-80#) or the GF 700H or XH Offshore Series (whats the difference????) trimmed 6" from the butt end, or their 7465 series to get the 6'6". Alps or Pac Bay Channel lock aluminum reel seats or a Fuji PSS 20mm if it will fit, Eva fore and rear (14" rear/12" fore, may cut down to 10"), Aluminum Gimbal with cover. I am thinking of the Fuji SiC MNSG series, 25 or 20 stripper, 2 10's for the bumpers, 10 first 180, then 16, 16, 12, 12, 10, and a 10 or 12 MNST tip top would round out the components. I will use my Daiwa 40HA on it for now for cod, and an Avet Lx 2 spd later most likely, 65# braid, 50# mono topshot next year for Tuna.

The spinner I may go with an OTI, or Phenix later on with similar specs as above with a Saragosa 18000. Guys on one of the local websites are going for a pollack trip in Mid November, so I would like to get the spiral done for them to try out and hopefully get some orders!

Taz..when you were shopping did you get to feel the differance of the calstar blanks?
the 7465 is sweet

you should really get to cut and build and try for yourself the different rods,
that way when a client asks you will be able explain what the differance is.
most guys buying custom rods want advice from their builder. . its part of what they pay for.

you can get a TON of internet advise,,and alot of guys do things different..its usually best to do it your way..for your customs.
you will also find when using different guide setups on blanks sometimes will change the action.

its usually good to have a few of every guide size and style so you can see what the differance is..

most of the cod stuff i do is 7' minimum..usually 8'
and rated more than the 20-50..

i am sure the guys on the local site will be happy to try the new rod..cant wait for the report...good luck

I did some online shopping No one in the area that I know of has any Graphiters or a selection of blanks to pull on in CT. I think I have to go to Jersey or NY, Maybe MA to check them out. One store has a 700XH, and thats it! New England is often stuck in the past, still using mostly mono for shark and tuna and the big, bulky 2 spd reels. 8 to 9' broomsticks are most often used for slinging 1# of lead jigs for cod, no bend in the rods! Graphite hasn't gotten full acceptance yet, either! Ugly Sticks, big Penns and Mono still rule the roost!

I guess this trip is a Pollack headboat trip out of NH. One of the guys on the trip, the "tackle pro for the group", recommended a 7' 20-50# or a 7' 30-60, something along those lines, like an Ugly Stick Tiger. Any comparable blanks out there?? I see a lot of 20-50 and 30-60s, but will they have enough backbone to work the heavy jigs???? Am Tackle, Calstar 610, St Croix SC2 Musky blanks, etc I was looking at, along with the tuna style rods. They are using 10 to 16oz jigs. Just when I thought I had it figured out, I learn new stuff! Doh! I started to look at the heavier Graphiters and saw they would be pretty close to my Tuna jigging rod I was looking at, so I figured it would do double duty. How will one of those graphiters cast and/or work a 16oz jig??? They don't have any lure weights listed for recommended working weights. Plus, I dunno if they will hold up to guys fishing off of the rails either!

I wish I could go out and buy 6 different Graphiters, SS, couple Phenix, OTI, etc, but I just don't have the funds. At almost $100 a pop, it gets expensive!! Plus having to buy reels to test cast and space with, it gets expensive, quick! I am trying to use different blanks when building up my personal rods for prototypes to get a better feel, but that adds up! My tuna jigging rod is a little over $200 in materials alone!

Anyplace in or around CT that has various types of blanks in stock to pull on?? I got the Southern Tackle catalog in CT, very limited selection. Hal Brown wont talk to me cuz I don't have a retail storefront.
