VJ Foregrip question

I did some playing with the Mudhole 30-50 blank, spiral wrapped, today. I have a 12" foregrip on it, and when lifting 10# off the ground, the line is barely off the foregrip. I can feel the whole foregrip flexing! I tried it at 15# lift, no problems with the blank, but the braid is resting on the foregrip. I taped on a 30mm guide right at the foregrip, (25mm stripper is approx 3" past the foregrip). Barely off the foregrip with a 30mm stripper. I didn't try a 20# lift cuz I didn't want to slice the foregrip, so I am looking at using a 40mm BMNAG guide for the stripper. Is this normal???? Are there any other guides that will be durable enough and give the height needed so I don't slice the foregrip/fingers??? Maybe a surf guide? It's like 13 to 14" from the face of the reel spool to the end of the foregrip and with the amount of flex this has at 15# Drag, I need to keep that line off the foregrip!!!

I am looking at the HVSG and SVSG series of guides, since they sit higher. Any thoughts??

you may be asking the blank to do to much.
40mm on a spinner is ok
IF you want a high guide the HH series fuji is about the highest..
the 30-50# blanks may be a good spinner
or
for use use with 10-12# of drag

just stuff you find out after building and playing with ALOT of different blanks

Yeah, I was planning to use it with around 10# of drag. I may just do the 30mm and set it at 15#. I asked my supplier to see what other guides have the lower inner portion of the ring at the same height as the 40mm BMNAG. I would prob keep it around 15#, but I would be able to push it up a tad more if needed w/o worrying about getting sliced!

The 50-100, 5'8" is tempting as a spinner!!

It just pure physics of the blank being over loaded. Eventhough it can handle it its just too much bend like paul said. You can shave the top of the grip as I've seen before and there is a method of sliding the grip and putting on after the guide is wrapped. The west coast guys do it on the long range boats because they use long forgrips for rail fishing.

If it were me I would just have the lines cut through the grip like I have on some of my rods that have been over fished. Good luck.

I don't mind the grip getting sliced a little, but its my fingers I worry about!!! I spoke with Todd at Mudhole, he said the blanks were designed more for spinning reels due to the bend and that issue. I may just throw a 30mm instead of the 25 thats on it and fish it with 12 to 15# drag. What drag # do people usually use for cod fishing in New England?

Between the bend, long, fat foregrip (12" long, 1.5" wide) and the way the blank bends, it makes it a pain. 15# is doable with a 30mm stripper guide, so I may just set it up for that.

The problem has nothing to do with grip selection. Most jigging blanks coming out today are TOO SLOW taoered.
I often wonder, what were they thinking about? In a year or two they will come out with some new Med. or Faster taper blanks, and say they have made a new discovery. They will learn.

LOL. Just like Shimano First they were Moderate, then they went to Moderate Fast and raised the price $100

Talked to some guys, they use 10# or less than drag usually, so this one should be fine once I get the 30mm on it, which will let people bump up the drag a little if needed and still keep their fingers. I will just cover the area where the old guide went with some wraps and decals.

I'm gonna try to do some measurements and find a guide that is taller w/o being a huge 40mm ring. I am looking at the HVSG high frame surf guides. If not, I will just use the 30mm and maybe try to bend the legs higher.
