    Torium anti-reverse failure fix?

Well...I was experimenting with the drag on my torium today. Tied straight to a 20# weight to see if I could lift it off the ground, I could, but still got a little creep from the drag. On about the third try I hear a pop and the anti reverse is shot. Reel now turns both ways. I assume it can this be fixed, what is the best way to assure this doesn't happen again? I was hoping to fish with it Friday, any way to put a band-aid on it?
    Thanks

the best way to assure it doesnt happen again is not to put more than 15 pounds of drag on it. the pawls wont handle that much force.

good explanation of tear down and reassembly - very easy. i just called shimano and they sent me 2 antireverse pawls for free.

    confused?

Thanks for the help, but now I'm confused, do I need to replace the pawl or the bearing? I don't see an anti-reverse bearing in the upgrade description, might it be called something else?
    Thanks again.

Well, we dont kow what size reel you have, so Ill just show you part from the torium30.

    torium 14 key # 488
    torium 16 key # 493
    torium 20 key # 493
    torium 30 key # 493
    torium 50 key # 493

its actually called a "roller clucth bearing". The plastic cage is usually what fails first, causing the handle to fly backwards and catch on the anti reverse pawl, usually the pawl survives, doesnt sound like it in this case.

Now it it were me, I'd also replace the "anti reverse pawl" part number 303. Especially after hearing a "pop" from the inside of your reel, and having the handle go both ways now.

Dont forget to upgrade your drags to carbon fiber, the stock drags are junk, 3 thin fiber washers, I put carbontex in mine, ought to last the lifetime of the reel.

Toriums are very simple to work on, just need the parts.

You'll need the bearing and a pawl if your handle is spinning backwards. Just call Shimano and order them. For the 30 they are part numbers TGT0493 Roller Clutch Bearing and TGT0303 Antireverse Pawl. Also take a look at TGT0494 Roller Clutch Inner Tube and make sure you didn't damage the two ears that engage TGT0929 the keyed washer on top of your drag stack. If you have not put the upgraded side plate on have them send you that also, it's free. The only way to avoid this is to keep the drag under 18 lbs. If you need help on the tear down and repair try this: http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=45.0 It's for a Trinidad but they are basically the same reel. Be careful and note which way the keyed washer on the drag stack is sitting and don't flip it. If you do when you get the reel back together you will have very little to no drag.

Danny, I put on the upgraded handle you gave me last week, looks sweet. I haven't gotten to try it out yet though. John Bishop has OTI jigging rods in stock and they are sweet. My Torsa is sitting on one now. The Saltist ended up on the Trevala. For sea bass though I think a 20 or even smaller would be better.

Thanks a lot for the help! Looks like I need to find a better reel to grouper fish with. I don't think 18# drag is going to cut it for a big fish. I'm thinking Saltiga.

I have not had the same proplem with the Saltiga yet. But my guess is that it will be the same as the Torium just based on both reels construction being so similar.

    another one bites the dust!!!

toriums cant handle that much drag. i would get a different reel, tons of threads about other reels and prices in this forum. and you will find you are not the only one who's torium died. my friends did it with me and a 9' shark, bout broke his thumb when it gave up the ghost and started winding backwards.
