Post Tackle Question Western Humps Marathon, FL

    Hello all,

Just wanted to say what a great forum the information so far has helped me purchase my first jigging setup.

I went with a Saragosa 18000F+Trevala TVS66MH and have spooled my Saragosa with 65lb Power Pro.
I am about to make my first trip jigging to Marathon, FL at the end of this week for 3 days I am hoping to be fishing the 409 hump and western hump plus some various wrecks and places I know.
I was wondering if anyone with any experience could assist me on which jigs I should purchase? Currently I have purchased 2 Williamson Vertical jigs 3.5oz and 5oz and one Shimano Butterfly Jig 10oz.
I was looking to purchase a couple more Shimano Butterfly jigs for snapper / grouper maybe lighter?

From what I have read the Western Hump lies in the middle of the Gulf stream running around 400 - 500ft deep. I am thinking maybe 10oz (250g) is too light? Main thing I will be trying to target here is some Aj's and Tuna with the chance at a queen snapper or grouper.

Any help would be much appreciated and thanks for taking your time.

    Adam

These are the specs on your rod. Its pretty much a 200g rod, give or take. I would say you will need some 300g stuff and maybe more if you want to tickle the top of the mount in the stream. Depending on your current, you might be able to, you might not.

I would recommend just getting some jigs to match your current rod, over the area. At least it will be loading properly and you can use it in on the reefs.

From my collection, I would recommend:

240g Katana on down in weight to the 160g Katanas. 200g First Drops and 190g Sandfleas would fish well on that rod.

An easy pick would be the 200g pack. http://shop.easterntackle.com/produc...7&categoryId=6 with some 160g and 240g katanas added to round it out.

    Hope you all do well.

Thanks for the advice, I will certainly purchase this set of jigs just don't know if it will be before my trip as we leave Thursday.

So you don't think that rod would handle the 300g jigs? I will purchase a heavier rod in the future.

It might very well handle the 300's, but you will have to give it a try and decide yourself. Overloading is always better for someone just starting, than it is to underload. Underloading is a lot of work for the angler.

yea, that was my first instict - to let you know 10oz is probably the max i would jig on that rod. Dont get me wrong, i have that rod, it was my first jigging rod too, and as long as you dont high stick it youll be fine. BUT i fish 200g and down on that rod.

Eastern Tackle(ET) Katanas are a favorite of mine. 160g for AJs you can get away with the 240s too, but i just stick with the 160s.

one of my favorite AJ jigs. 160 and 200g. Pink, Blue, Swordfish.
    Shout Slide Actor Jigs

i also like the ET Ayasugi 240g. and the ET Longs, but he doesnt make these anymore. Supposedly there are some new jigs coming our way from ET targeting AJ and BFT

You will probably end up getting a heavier rod at some point. i hear you can get the last gen OTI for a song now that the new nano-carbon models are out.

i used a lot of small (250g and down) white/glow/pink/blue combos for blackfin last time i was down there, but i just jigged what i had. You should search for blackfin and see if anyone has any better suggestions.

    GOOD LUCK!

When I was there last summer for 6 weeks the Humps had Black fin and Mahi all over them. I too would recommend the 160-200g jigs with your set up and the 200g pack from Eastern tackle is perfect for the humps. One thing though the humps get hit pretty hard so you either want to be the first one there(at daylight) or the last one there(at Dusk) for best results.

Good luck and post plenty of pictures.

you need a few 200 gr jigs maybe a little more but stay away from more than 300gr. pick long jigs the turkey slider from river2sea colors on blue and pink very shinny jigs blackfin tuna would take them every time. you can use any long jig from eastern tackle and good luck

Is 'overloading' fishing a jig heavier than the recommended weight of the rod? I use light jigs (140 - 150gr) and feel like my rod which is rated to handle heavier jigs imparts a great action (underloading), and jigs with less effort. I feel when I use my trevala that is rated for that size jig has a tendency not to 'rebound' as much on the upswing and the rod just bends as I drag it through the water. That seems to require more effort as I am not getting the 'snap' as the flex rod straightens (rebounds) quickly on each up stroke.

Curious to your perspective as I am always trying to learn and improve my game.

    Thanks,
    Greg
