    Swordfish

So who here has jigged, or tried to jig a sword? I think I saw a picture of Kil a while back with a sword that he got on a jig.

Anyone care to share? I'd like to learn about how it could be done.

    Thoughts?

Was in the Spencer 2 years ago when someone jigging at night hooked about a 150 sword. Unfortunately it broke off at the boat but what a rush when he came up and we were expecting another tuna! I caught a 30 pound sword on a squid jig that same year on a spinning rod talk about luck! Of course I am still waiting to eat some sword steaks!

We always have a rod with some sort of a lure on it. We have not landed a SF on a lure but we did get bit one night. The fish came in hot, darting in and out of the light, Mike grabbed the spinning rod and pitched him a white buck-tail - wham, zzzzzzzzzzz had him on for about 5 min when the hook pulled. Probably got hooked in the bill, I saw him whack it.

SF for the most part eat a little different than most fish, it may be little hard to get good hookups on jigs and lures, they seem to dart in, stop, whack the bait, dart back in and grab it.

Catching one on a jig will definitely put you in an elite group.

Good luck, let us know how you do.

The next bite on a jig.
I wanted to try two weeks ago for an overnighter to do just this, but the weather was generally uncooperative. There has been a load of them off of Oregon Inlet recently.

Never on a jig but here's a few tips for starters!

    1) They aren't always down deep at night. Work the entire water column

    2) Come up with a Jig thats skirted at the bottom like a squid.

    3) Would need to be night glow as well

    4) Hydro glow next to the boat or underwater lights have proven to attract them in.

no landed swords on the jig yet.. but this past year we were driftin around the 100line of the toms and hooked what was thought to be a sword it shot surface bound and took off close to 200yards on the first run stopped and started again twice, i finally sunsetted the accurate and it popped the 80lb fluro. when i got it back you could see the angle changes with the scope and sharp indentations of where the bill was marking through. it came on a 160gr pink/silver shimano jig 80ft down.. definatley a fish of a differnt nature thats for sure.

sounds like a sword to me. that is exactly what a lot of daytime fish do. sometimes on the drop it just doesn't seem to get to the bottom, next thing you know, you tighten the line up and it is scoping out and you start to feel the fish pumping. a sword would be my guess.

i do believe that a few years ago there were som guys on the canyon express or one of those overnight boats out of OC that had a japaneese jigger catch one at night, but never heard of it in the daytime or other than that. there have been a few caught on flies in south florida at night. definately is a small group of guyes that have done either and i would say an even smaller group of guys that did it on purpose and not by accident
