swinging for the fences report
What was it they say about the old home run kings, that they also strike out the most? Well, we swung for the fences yesterday and tried for the fleeting glimmer of one last bluefin. We had been watching a warm core eddy all week, but we knew that by Thursday it had broken off and was fading away fast. We went for it anyway.
We made a 50+ mile run out of Oregon Inlet and did find what was left of it. 60 degree green water with a few light rips, a scattering of birds, but never marked any fish in it.
After searching about 20 miles of it, we gave up and went back in for tilefish. We managed to scratch out a few, and some sea bass, with Joey having the hot hand with the most, as well as a respectable 15.5lb citation(hopefully he will post a pic of the stud). Hot colors on the jigs were all glow and blue hologram.
We weren't rewarded for the amount of effort and the 150 total miles we put in for the day, but we have been batting above average lately, so we were due to even the scorecard. I told Pete after Friday, I am ready to put a smack down on the jacks, for pure entertainment value.

Good report Jim, hey you don't know if you don't try, and it looks like you still had a good day even if you didn't get a Blue.

Here is a pic of Joey's big boy. What a fish!!! We may be onto something. We have pulled two citations in the last two trips off the same spot.

Stop staring at my Avatar.
Man...I love pulling those tiles in!! They fought from the bottom ALL the way to the top. They didn't give up half way thru the fight like most bottom dwellers.

Sorry you and Pete didn't get your blue, but nice tiles. Sort of the same for us. Couldn't get to the temp break with my dad on, alittle to rough for his comfort. Just a few bsb and one grouper. Oh well can't catch them all the time but it beats work.
Good report and great pictures and congrats on the citation.

Sorry that water didn't hang out a little longer for you. Those tiles have saved many a trip for me.

We couldn't have been more than 12 hours late. But finding one fish in 4000 ft of water with no help is literally a needle in a haystack. I'm just thankful to the Lord Above for the success that I have had this year.

Been following your posts and thank you for sharing
I was wondering if that school of fish might be headed east rather than north following the good water. I usually do not pay a lot of attention to the good water when BFT up here because we have caught them in dirty green water many times as long as the bait is around. Sand Eels are the ticket. Tt is almost always on a hill or lump between 20-30 fathoms for us up to the north. Do you think that posible the VA, Beach boats may find them now or boats up around the 21,26 mile hills? We are all waiting for hopefully those same body of fish to come up our way soon. Thank you for the report and pictures.

I feel like they are gone for the most part. I talked to the tuna man on saturday and he said everyone is hoping they leave, because they schoolie yellowfin will not mix with them as long as they are around. He said if they will leave, the yft will show.
